Default black pieces of carbon spitting out muffler

Been seeing lil black pieces of carbon spitting out my exhaust. I really thought nothing of it cause I thought it was just doing that for a day but its been doing it for about a week now. I look in the muffler and can see little black pieces that are spitting out of my muffler. Yes I know I could be running rich but is this a serious problem? Or could it be just a bunch of carbon

your probaly running rich, maybe your catylitic(sp butchered) converter is gunked up could be a few things...what are these lil black pieces? are they metallic? if so it could be the platinum in the converter coming undone or coming out(never heard of that ever happening tho)

my b16 turbo is doing the same thing. i can stick my hand to it and see the black things hit my hand. i think it is because i am running really rich right now. if thats not why its doing it i wanna know what it could be from also.

Most likely, your both running rich.

Have you noticed a decrease in power at all? Made a little or even a lack in top end power. It may be your Cat.

if you have a built motor running on the rich side then you'll see some balck. if you are stock and you are spitting out black then you probably burnt the cat and causing it to just shoot out black

this happened to my 1985 jetta gli. i was teaching my sister how to drive a 5 speed and she stalled it. restarted the car and it was running really funny, like only on three cylinders. stepped on the gas (it was an old car and sometimes just needed some help getting started) and flaming chunks of metal flew out the exhaust pipe. turned off the car and waited about 15 minutes and everything was normal again...kinda weird but this **** does happen.

i have no cat so that is out of the equation. 3in turbo back. i cant tell if i am loosing any power or gaining any, its just fast. to the op. if your car has been the same for a while and it just started spitting out black its probably the cat.

well you will get chunks of black carbon stuff. The carbon is a by-product of combustion and when you get condensation inside the exhaust pipe it mixes with the carbon making a sludge which then hardens in chunks which then get broken off from vibration et cetera. Idont think its any thing to worry about. If you really want to take the exhast off and run water through it and clean it out. goodluck

Turned the car on this morning and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Went to go look at the muffler to see if any black stuff had come out of it but nothing came out. I looked in the muffler and saw some little black pieces at the tip of the muffler. So then I grabbed a napkin and whiped it. Looked on the napkin came out that theres water in my pipes.. So what s should i do now?

How old is your muffler? I had a similiar problem but it was the packing coming out of muffler. I started noticing the exhaust note getting louder

water on your pipes is from the condensation of the weather. expletive it mang, just run a test pipe and if you still get that **** THEN get worried. I got a omni test pipe for sale will bolt right on your **** too

Hold a white t-shirt up to catch the flakes coming out. That should give you an idea what the flakes look like which could help you find where they are coming from.
