3rd gear grinding.. help
Do the usual....check fluid level, change fluid to Honda MTF or GM syncromesh, with the last resort being replace the 3-4 synchro set, 3rd gear, and maybe the 3-4 shift fork as well.
The longer you let it go grinding into 3rd, the greater the damage will be to the synchro sleeve and 3rd gear. Find a solution to keep it from grinding ASAP to keep it from escalating to a more expensive repair, if it isn't already at that point.
I think the cost for a 3-4 synchro set is around $200 to $250, shift forks are usually $50 to $60, and any single gear are anywhere from $55 to $80.

You'll need the 3-4 sleeve set. 3rd og 4th syncros only come as a pair.

You should change that ASAP because the longer you drive with grinding the more wear you'll put on the 3rd gear. If your unlucky you might have to change the gear as well.

Open it up. Could be a synchro, could be one of those fork things (I don't know the correct name for it)... but opening it up will be the only positive way to check.

These are some nice good answers guys! I will probably have some more detailed questions once I open up my extra transmission. This should happen soon.
Ben, you will remain close to the top of my list for if I get myself in trouble. What have you been doing lately? Heading to Expo 6 this year? Really really close to home this time.

No Expo for me this year. I've got too much time vested into work. I'll just be attending Formula One, Indy 500, and One Lap of America.
Syncro grinding in 3rd Gear ay. Oi dude, if u wana temporary relieve for a while, use Auto Tranny Fluid man. Trust me it works, i wont do more damage, it works the same as GM Syncromesh fluid.
Celica GT4 (St185)'s are common with gearbox syncros wearing especially in 2nd and 3rd, and i owned one. They are a bitch to fix, labour wise. And as a temporary relief i used Auto Gear box fluid, until i sold the car. People on the forum that i use to talk to about the gearbox all used it and told me to do it as a temporary relief. So give that a go man
