Default Fuel filter woes.... are the washers THAT important?

I replaced an injector and my fuel filter the other day on my DPFI 89 sedan. Ever since then my gas mileage has taken a huge dive, and I have a surging idle problem. Today I looked under the hood and noticed gas all over the fuel filter. It was coming out of the intake line (from the tank).

When I replaced the fuel filter originally I didn't change the copper washers. It totally slipped my mind. Today I changed the washers.

Is it possible that the problem is caused by this? Can old washers really cause this much of a problem?

what do you think.... did you really have to ask?

its obvious theyre important. Honda didnt put them their for looks, thats why you had gas sprayed everywhere.

just feel lucky you didnt burn yourself to the ground.

Always replace copper gaskets. They are set once and don't like to be set again. They deform to much. That's probably where your mileage went, on the ground.

Your lucky you didn't burst into flames.

You have to replace aluminum washers but copper can be reused if you heat it. You have to heat it up till it glows with a torch and let it cool and it will soften and can be used again. I have done this many times with copper headgaskets on atv's and always works fine

Then again - you can go this route and never have to deal w/the funky OE filter/washers ever again . . . . . .

Tip - read thu whole thread first . . . .

uhm, yeah - don't feel bad, this kinda happened to me too, the first time I changed it myself - but not MAJOR leakage, thank goodness. Just had to make sure get all five NEW dang washers (total pita).

Thanks... And they are right... it's a good thing I didn't burn up. I just painted my car a few months ago and I'd hate to scrap it now.

But hey, now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

There is no need for me to get my panties in a bunch. Besides, I look at it this way. I just found an optional sedan audio console at the junkyard and put it on my car. I would hate for that thing ot melt.

Oh, and my EX interior would be a shame to waste...

although I have to admit that sometimes I daydream about torching my car myself.

it's a crush washer, meaning that it deforms to create a seal. any crush washer should be replaced before reinstalling the part (brakes, banjo bolts, drain plug, etc.)

i've never done the "heat it up" method, but i won't knock it if you're in a pinch. for a couple nickels, i'll just replace mine.
