i live in cali and am thinking of doing a swap to my 94 coupe, i have a b16 block that i am considering building, what as far as smog would i have to do to stay leagal or would it be better to sell it and get a b18b motor.

it depends if the year of the block is the same as the chassis or newer.

 

Staying legal with a B16A is much the same as staying legal with any other motor. Baically, the motor must be California emissions (no JDM or US Federal), it must be of the same year or newer than the car it is going into, and it must use the emissions hardware that came with the motor. So with your 1994 coupe, it would be best to use a 1994-1995 Del Sol VTEC motor. These motors are somewhat rare and expensive. The B18B is cheaper but, in my opinion, not nearly as good. For not much more, you might consider a B18C swap.
