Default Shifter Cable issues

Okay I have posted before about having weird shifting issues with my H22. Originally I had thought I had shitty shifter cables and so did a few fellow H-T members so I replaced them with 92-96 Non Adjustable shifter cables, made it ten times worse so I put the old ones (97+ H22 adjustable cables) back on. Here's my problem, I can go through all five gears, but the thing is alot of the time I have a problem getting into first and fifth and every once in awhile 3rd, it's like if i don't shift dead on or hold it in for a sec it will sit there grinding until i go to 2nd or 4th. I have absolutely no problems with 2nd, 4th, or R. I'm thinking that since one shifter cable controls 1,3,5 and the other 2,4,R I need to tighten the shifter cable that controls 1,3,5. Cuz logically thinking Im thinking that its too loose therefore Im having to fish for the gears. Anybody have any input onto this subject it would be greatly helpful. What do you guys think I should do??

Does it feel spongy? What base plate are you using? Pictures?

Your understanding of one cable doing 1-3-5 and the other 2-4-R is way off BTW. One cable goes forward back to push sideways for 1/2, 3/4, or 5/R area. This is done when you push left/right. Then the other cable pushes forward or pulls back to put it into the forward or back gear.

Does the clutch feel spongy?? No?? The shifter yes in a sense. It doesn't wiggle all around but it moves a little but it always has since its cable controlled and not shift linkage, I did the whole zip tie method also. I'm not sure about the base plate, is that the shifter box?? If so I believe it is a 97-00 accord. What would you like pics of?? I can have em in the morning. Okay thanks for the clarification about the shifter cables I guess I was misinformed.

well to my understanding you HAVE to use the same shifter box as the cables you are using or else you will have this same problem you are having. so if your using 97 prelude shift cables you have to use 97-01 prelude shift box if your using accord shift box you have to use accord shift cables. hope that helps you.

yeah i was gonna say....nothing guarantees that the accord shifter throws the same as the prelude...

the 5th and 4th gen preludes should be the same though....though its possible theyre not...

no mags to my knowledge 5th and 4th gens are way off i have a 5th gen shift box and cables in my hatch. and like i said i talked to norris and he has tried it in his race cars and even cars he has put together on the street and they say it works you just miss gear like non other and your tranny hates life soon after. the bushing are the same but thats it.

so your saying dump my 5th gen shifter assembly which is 97+?? and instead go with 4th gen shifter assembly, 92-96?? What does all this consist of?? shifter plate, shifter, and shift cables??

if you have a complete set of shifter cables be it the 5th gens. or the 4th gens. use it i personally like the 5th gens. i dont like the 4th gens. just my preference. but what im telling you is use a complete set of cables, shifter and shift cables from any year as long as they are from the same car. you could even use accord cables and box but like i said it has to be complete. hope that clearafys it for you.

I think since I have an accord shifter plate, I probably have accord shifter cables then. Do you know if the 97+ up Accord shifter cables are adjustable??? Since I have got 92-96 cables that I know for a fact are prelude cables I'll probably just stick to that gen shift assembly?? Why do you like the 5th gen more than the 4th gen?? I thought your friend said the 5th gen grind like no other, or did he mean thats what happens if you mix- and match??

I think what he's trying to get you to do would be to use a 5th gen Prelude shifter box. That way your box, cables, and tranny will all be 5th gen Prelude.

EDIT: ......or whatever generation it's out of.

I don't think my trannys a 5th gen though, I think its a 4th gen M2A4. Is there any way to clarify what year the trannys out of?? I did this tranny swap so its not original tranny.

thanks mags for clarifying hahah. the tranny doesnt matter what year its from as long as you dont miss match cables and box. the reason i like the 5th gens better is cause i think its designed better its just my prefference but the 4th gens sit lower more like a stock shifter when you swap into a civic.
