H22 EG swap - my shifter cable is too short!!! - what to do...
I got around to installing the shifter today, but I hit a snag when I found that one of the shifter cables is too short. Its the one on the passenger side (looking at the shifter) that is actuated by moving the stick up and down (1-2 or 3-4 and 5-R). The other cable fits ok it seems. When I try to put it in 1st gear position the right cable is about an inch too short. It looks like none of the parts are damaged and looks the same as the pictures of others I've seen. I'm thinking its the wrong shifter cable set but it fits otherwise.
To get exact it looks like the outer tube that guides the shaft from the shifter is about 3/4" shorter as the other guide tube. In the pictures I've seen they look the same length.
This crap pisses me off, i could be on the road tomorrow if it wasn't for this!!

Make sure that you routed the cable correctly. It should not have a problem reaching since after the little metal bracket thingy they are pretty much the same length after that going to the shifter.. Take pictures if you can...

You have the right cable on the right selector, correct?
Because they're NOT the same lengths....
There's a large one and a small one.
Also, do you have your cables routed over, or under the subframe?
If it's under, you might have a problem there, because that can take up quite a bit of length.

I had the same problem. And it was causing mis-shift into thrid gear. Fixed it by moving the entire shift assembly forward so that the cables had a nice smooth arc. BTW: I'm using 97 lude shifter and cables. and I'm routing it under the rear motor mount (center of the engine bay)

I'll try to take a picture tomorrow, but I'll try to clarify... When the right cable is locked into the shifter base it;s still too short. It's not a routing problem ( I went over the subframe) I got in on the street today and it shifts into the right gears, so its setup correctly. I ended up extending it by the way... Weird...

Re: (poison)
Ok, here are some pics - the shifter is in 1st gear position so you can see how short it is. Its not a routing problem. When its clipped in to the shifter base, the rod is actually too short. Problem is fixed though
