Default Tuners/Shops: What chassis dyno are you using and feedback pls.

Planning on opening up a small shop/garage where I live out here in the Pacific and would like your inputs and feedbacks for the chassis dyno you are using. I have been looking at DynoJet and Mustang Dyno. Possibly DynoJet 224x or Mustang Dyno MD-500.

We do have a DynoJet model 248c locally, but the rollers are very large and heavy that tuning for part throttle and driviablity was difficult due to the large and heavy rollers.

Looking for a dyno that can handle big hp as well tuning part throttle and daily driving and not only WOT.

It is really based on your budget. A good dyno for the money is the dynojet 224x($23k) and the dynocom 1800x($21k). If you have the means(money) then look at the dyno dynamics($45k) and dynapack($60k), they are both portable and very nice tuning tools.

Is the shop "small" in square feet, budget, or both?

i've been reading about the diff dynos as well. I guess you just have to see what is best for the needs of your area. I'm not that familiar with Guam and the motorsports there, but I do have some customers that are putting good all motor and turbo power there. But not in the range of 800+hp. I'd look at what type of cars you're going to tune mostly and base it on that.

we are using the mustang AWD dyno & like it alot. our buddy has a dynojet AWD & it is good to. the diff we found it that the mustang is a more acurate dyno. dynojet overrates by about 15-20% our dyno we can calibrate & it is exact. the only downfall we see is our mustang cost 90,000$ witch hurt. but we think it was worth it. we set it up ourselves witch took about 1day. AWD cars are what is hot & will stay that way. so spend the extra money & get a AWD dyno.

we use a DYNOmite dyno and most of our cars are tuned start to finish on it. street tune, hwy, decel and power. most are taken for a ride after just to check and rarely do we have to tweak anything. the data acq is also sick, and they have very good prices.

I've never experienced this, the only thing you really can't do well on a dynojet is tune part throttle timing, because you can't view torque in real time. A/F tuning at part throttle is just a matter of how you drive the car on the dyno.

i agree with tony on that and i believe dynojets big rolls only simulate 2600lbs so in a civic it should be a very good simulation compared to how the car would accelerate in the real world.

As a previous Dynojet 224x owner, and a current Dynapack 4000 2wd owner, I'll give my opinion for ya.. In short, the one thing that pissed me off the most about the Dynojet was its poor excuse for an rpm pickup. The thing worked like ****, their customer service sucked and on call #10 for this same issue, I was told to wrap the cables in aluminum foil. Yes, it may actually work, but I didn't bother trying it. I bet if you check with every Dynojet owner, they will all have had an issue with the rpm pickups at one time or another. Not to mention the fact that the unit had no available 0-5v inputs to use my Motec wideband with (they wanted an extra $3500 for their poor excuse for a wideband system). I finally sold the unit right after my warranty expired (1 year) to a shop in Texas (Autologic) and as far as I know, they are happy with it, to each his own. I bought a used Dynapack 3000 out of Canada, and even though I bought it secondhand, the product support from Dynapack has been great, and I just had it upgraded to the 4000 model.

The only other unit I would ever consider is the Dyno Dynamics.

Keep in mind, these are just my opinions, I do not, and have not ever, work for Dynojet, Dynapack, Dyno Dynamics, or any other Dyno manufacturer for that matter.

That is too bad to hear that you had nothing but bad luck with your dynojet and the customer service there.... I have had my 248 dynojet for almost 5 years now.... Sure there have been a few little hickups along the road, (as for maitnence related issues) but all and all I have been very happy... The support from dynojet for me has been awsome.... Chris down there has been awsome for any technical support... As for there wideband's, I will agree that they are way overpriced for the plug that they use but a buddy of mine took care of that issue... We built a pigtail harness for the unit to adapt to a boshe sensor... Back to back results where identical as far as the a/f ratio on the dyno and the cost of the sensor's are around 130.00 cheaper... When purchasing a dyno, remember you are purchasing a tool... Try and purchase the toolt that will help you complete the job the way you would like it....

The only other unit I would ever consider is the Dyno Dynamics.

i use the bosch sensors too. so much cheaper and maybe im crazy but seem to last 10x longer. i also tested it to make sure it worked properly with a dynojet sensor, aem, and innovate widebands. the ones from dyno jet are $$$

Thanks for your comments and great input.

Please keep them coming.

Well, majority of the vehicle here are either FWD or RWD. We have a very limited amount of AWD, currently only about 4 which are Skyline GTR's, Evo's, and STI's. Majority run within the 200whp to 400whp. Though we have a handful of American Muscle Drag vehicles and Rails that are in the single digit ET's.

I will also look into Dyno Dynamics and Dynapack. Portables sound great too, but come with additional costs.

Yes I also have experienced rpm pickup issues with the Dynojet 248c from time to time when it was being operated.

Well I do have an option to buyout the DynoJet 248c locally, but it has been sitting for about 2 years or a bit more in a warehouse. It comes with the wideband A/F system, etc. It was previously installed in-ground. It is huge in size. It is running the older WinPep 6 software. I have seen the pit hole needed for and in-ground installation, it is deep and large. Quite a bit of work. Would prefer something a bit more compact in total size. I believe it is being sold for $20K. Not sure if it is worth it and how do I go about testing the system and accuracy.

Previous shop owner passed away and the estate was undergoing legal issues within the family. So finally settled and cleared so it is released. That is why it was in storage for all this time.
