Default I need this started in 7 days.. lost the key!!

I just got a 88 Civic DX just for a nice little beater. Well the thing hasn't ran in awhile. Then I get it towed to a friends garage to work on it but I only have 7 days to get it done.

Tow truck comes. try to unlock the door. No go!! I must have lost it. He jimm'd the door for me so I cud put the e-brake down.

So I have it open but no key to start it. I don't mind hot-wiring as I am fairly well with wiring so I don't mind fixing it afterwards. Otherwise I may get a locksmith to make me a new one (a little over $100, but thats what I was told from a friend, any one?), last choice is to get some locks/key cylinder from a junkyard with the keys. this wouldn't be a bad choice but I am sure I'll get charged an arm and a leg.

The reason the last one isn't a big deal is cause out of the 4 places I can put the key only 2 of them have cylinders trunk and passenger door are missing them.

Any ideas of what I should do? Since its having problems starting it I have everything to check what it could be but I have no power (key) to check it out. I need this asap!! Help.

if any of you can give me advice (even if its hotwiring) let me know. if you don't feel comfortable telling me on here send me a PM or an e-mail.

I am no type of theif so I would use the knowledge just this one time!!

HELP HELP!!

-Shane

pull the screws out that hold the plastic around the steering colum take that off and you'll see you ign...theres a white cap on the end of the ing pull the 3 screws out of that pull it apart from the ign.and use a screwdriver on that won't cause any damage to it you will be able to start it and run it but the steering collum will still be locked so you can't turn the wheel....

this is what somebody told me to do. any input??

If it is the original ignition you can get the keymade at the local honda dealer for a few bucks... just give them the vin and show proof of owner ship

I could tell you how to rig up electronic ignition, but you'd still have to deal with the steering wheel lock. I'd try that dealership approach first.

i am actually not worried with the wheel lock as all I need to do is get it started. after that I am hoping the ignition setup I just ordered off of ebay will be here by then.

Anybody?

take the title to honda. or the vin and proof of ownership (insurance card, etc) like that dude said. they punch you a new key, and it'll work. cost me 6 bucks and about 5 minutes.

You can buy a new ignition lock cylinder from advance auto, if they carry them for your car. It comes with a new cylinder and keys.

You can also take the door handle off, if its the original, and it should have some kind of vin# or code, Take the handle to the dealership or any 1 who makes keys and see if they can copy it. I had my ignition ripped out of my old crx and i had to replace the ignition with one from a junk yard. I took the ignition to a lock smith and he made me a key in about ten minutes. It only cost me 12$

Goto a Honda Dealer, they'll make you a new key for 8 bux in 5 minutes. Just bring driver's liscense and proof of ownership (ie: registration, title, something like that)

i have order a different key/lock setups from ebay but I need to start testing **** to make sure I have fixed the no start problem!!

Looks like the screwdriver technique will have to do the trick. I'll let you guys know how it goes

Those guys are full of ****. 88-01 Civics all have the same keys. The dealership you were talking to are lazy because they dont want to have to look up the codes to master your key. Call around to other dealerships in the area. I had the same problem with my 98 Sedan. Took me 2 dealerships before I found one to do it then they told me that the other dealerships were just lazy.

No problem. They have the numbers and codes for all Hondas to 84. They are just lazy to make a copy because they are bastards because they actually have to call around to get the info instead of looking in a book.
