BRAKE lamp on
hey guys my brake lamp has been on for the past 2 days now when i turn on the car its not on but as soon as i touch the brake pedal it goes on. i checked the bulbs and its not that so what else do i look for?? the car is a 92 prelude h23.
So when the car is off, the brake light is ON? Then, when you turn on your car your brake light turns OFF? But when you depress the brake pedal, the light turns ON? Is that what you said?
If that's the case, it's probably NOT the normal culprit: If you follow the brake pedal up with your hand, you'll find a small hole where a rubber tab is suppose to be inserted in. When it breaks off, the brake light stays on indefinitely b/c the tab is what pushes a switch/button that keeps the light off. I had that happen on all the Hondas I've ever owned.
Sorry if that wasn't any help.

k sorry if it sounded confusing up top. this is what happens. when i turn on my car there is no lights on the dash then as soon as i touch the brake pedal the brake lamp light on the dash comes on. now i check my brake lights(bulbs) at the back of the car and they are fine. ?

This is happening to my Prelude as well, but it seems to be intermittent. Haven't managed to cure it yet. When the dash light comes on, there IS a brake light that doesn't light up, but the bulb is ok. Maybe a bad earth?

I will bet 100bucks that u just need to fill up the brake master cylinder to MAX or barely over. The fluid level sensor has been known to be very sensitive on prelude for some reason.
Applying the brakes and stopping the conistent momentum of the car will cause brake fluid to tilt foward. My cars brake light has come on when turning hard cause of the fluid not being topped off, also when shifting hard it has done it.
Fill up the master resevoir to MAX or barely over and I believe that will solve your problem :tu

maybe this is a semi common problem that no one talkes about....i have the same problem....it's intermittent.....also seems to be on more when it's warm and off more when it's cold, but not always
by warm and cold i mean the temp outside
by warm and cold i mean the temp outside
first top off ur fluid. if that doesnt help unplug the resevior (master cylinder) and the e-brake switch. see if the light goes out. if the light doesnt go out then u got a short to ground somewhere. if the light does go out then i would say u most likely need a new cap

I have had my car for over a year now and I am having this same problem. I have tried and tried everything that I can and still no resolution. It is the "BRAKE LAMP" light that is coming on. I have topped off my fluid but I havent over filled it. I will try to fill it up more and see if that might be the problem. I have checked all of my lights and replaced them. Would it be a good idea to umplug my battery and let it stay off for about 5 minutes and then plug it back up to see if that resets anything?
that doesn't work either(battery thing)
sometimes the "brake lamp" light is on and my lights work anyway and other times it's on and they don't work......hell one time the light was not on, but the only light working was was the center brake light....***** crazy
right now it's cold outside and everything works fine

I think there is a connector in the trunk area. Maybe on the left or right - one is for the radio antenna, and the other is for the middle brake light. Unplug it and see if it stays off.
Just to share my same experience....
i had my "brake lamp" light come on, which meant burnt out bulb. There are 3 bulbs back there as you well know, reverse, turn signal and parking lights/brake light. the parking light/brake light are 2 filaments (sp?) in the same bulb. so when I had my headlights clicked on 1 time (which turns on the "parking" lights) both lights were still on. however when I pressed the brakes, the "brake lamp" lit up and it was reported to me that the drivers side brake light didnt come on.
I struggled with this for quite some time, buying the wrong bulbs and all. well, it was just the "brake lamp" just as the car told me... the set of 2 bulbs were something like $7 (i refuse to buy the wal-mart ones, I swear they burn out quicker!) and they have 2 filaments in them. Thats the one I needed. Had I just listened to my damn car I woulda known. I'd start by replacing both of these bulbs on either side. Its a $7 investment and Im sure you can return the bulbs if it doesnt work out for you. If its some other problem, good luck to you!
Moral of this novel: Listen to your car, it trys hard to tell you whats wrong!
