Default One noisy and exciting way to end a race early

When an engine mount comes apart and the engine drops 3" on 1 side while you're travelling at nearly 100 mph, in the middle of a corner and at WOT, it can get really exciting!

I seriously thought that the whole bottom end had just grenaded with all the stuff I could hear hitting the underside of the car.

But, we'll fix her...

:voice from intro to The Six Million Dollar Man:

we can rebuild her...

we can make her stronger..

we can make her faster..

we have the technology...

A couple of years ago we had a Civic in one of our autox's and it had a cheaply built b16 conversion and lost a mount during a run. He was going to keep going and I had to redflag him. There were sparks coming out from under the hood and some rather interesting grinding noises and at the time I did not know what had happened, I just knew it was something bad. that had to be way more fun at speed.

From my vantage point coming around T5, all I could tell was that your car was in the dirt with somthing hanging down under it... I thought a driver ahead of you had seriously checked up in front of you and you had wadded up the front pass. side of the car. I was VERY glad after the race to find out that wasn't the case!

Yep, engine looks kinda funny as it sits right now... I can't wait to see it back together and racing again

Not quite the way to lower your CG.

High speed disasters are exactly that... disasters.

I'm glad to see that things weren't totally written off!

Imagine your rear LCA breaking on the side that takes the load in a 130+ mph turn and bottom of your wheel flops in to give you positive 10 degrees of camber.

Feeling the rear end shift like that at those speeds is nutty.

that's because you'd never get going fast enough to break anything.

Floyd, I actually had that same thing happen on my '85 Civic once. Except what failed for me was the mount that goes from the passenger side frame rail to the front of the tranny (where it bolts into the tranny with three bolts) What happened was that somehow each one of those three bolts worked themselvs out of the tranny case, somehow. Of course once that happened, that whole end of the engine/tranny did exactly what yours did, damn near fall out of the car. When it went, it blew apart the passenger side axle and immediately killed the engine. I thought I grenaded it from the noises, just like you.

This happened right before turn 5 at Road America (one of the fastest parts of the track) as I was going into the braking zone three wide with two other ITC Civic's on the last lap. Sucked - that was a great race! After the race I got it back to the paddock, put a jack under that side of the engine, lifted it back into place, replaced the bolts with some spares I had, and went racing the next day. The damn holes weren't even stripped out!

A word of caution though, when the engine fell, I think it really stressed the top radiator hose. I can only say "I think" because the next weekend I raced at Mid Ohio and that hose burst, covering my windshield in coolant and costing me a head. Look at your pictures and how it's stressing that top hose, I think I'd look at it and make sure it's still ok.

EXACTLY!

Ran on Toyos on Friday just to save my good tires, then I ran on Kumhos Sunday.

The people at Toyo should be kicked in the ***** for charging the same price for their tires as what the Kumhos cost. The Kumhos are so superior in feel and speed that it's just not funny.

Something about 60 series sidewalls that just makes a car move all over the place under braking and cornering....

That's exactly what happened here apparently...

Thansk for the heads up... I'll make sure to go ahead and replace instead of testing my luck....

Well I had a b16 da at one point and the mount under the timing cover actually only had 1 bolt in it(they way it came from jdm land). I didn't notice this or know any better at the time being it was my first swap when i was 16. Well the car had a stutter at time when it was warm so i changed the o2 sensor and let the car warm up and took it for a test run. Well it didn't stutter in first gear but when i shifting to second i lost all power and it sounded terible. The 1 bolt that was mounted to the motor sheered off dropping one side of the motor and shreaded the inside ribs of the timing belt. A head rebuild and some handy work with drill outs and it was all better.
