Default preparing for paint

i have a 99 rear bumper that is painted fbp. the only thing wrong with it is that on one of the corners, there is a really deep scratch. its not a little one, its around 6x6 inches. i was wondering what the process is of stripping the paint, and gettin ready for it to be painted. also, since the other half of the bumper is fine, is it possible to get half the bumper painted? instead of doing the whole bumper?

For the scratch, you can fill it with finish putty (glazing compound) just dont use the spot putty in the tube, use like evercoat metal glaze or something 2 part with a hardener.

To sand it to get it ready for paint start off with 400 wet/dry and then finish with 600 wet/dry. You can do these by hand first to scuff the clear but so it'll be even, finish it off with a DA so you cant have waves or anything in it from your hand pressure. I'm no bodyman, but thats how we did my entire car when we prepped it.

"something 2 part with a hardener." i dont get that part? so i use this putty stuff to fill in the deep scratches before i sand or should i sand everything then add it and sand over it to make it smooth and shape it to match the bumper? do you know if i can do this with only half the bumper and paint half of it to match the other half or do i have to go do the whole thing? its either my co workers that might paint it or it will be a shop. i have an extra rear bumper on the side but its a aftermarket certifit. i dunno if it would be a money saver and better to fix the OEM or just primer and sand the certifit and paint it.

ur about right but wen u wet sand it, there no need to DA. u can try to DA the scratch out but i also prefer using the putty and DA it smooth with a 220 grit sand paper and finishing the whole bumper with a 320 grit.

sorry if this sounds noob as hell but i gotta learn sometime. dual action it smooth means to just sand it down smooth? whats diff between that and regular sanding the bumper to take off the paint

if u wanna go to the dealer expect to pay like $250up. u can take somewere else just give the paint code on the driver side door.

Or do it ur self (note only if the bumper already has paint on it)

Another way u can do it 1. DA sander it with a 180 grit to 320 between prefer 220 (u cant find it in Harborfreight.com or near u for 30bucks) DA it till smooth be carefully try not to take alot off just enough to smooth out and follow the contour u dont want a flat area, dont stay in on area also move it left to right a cross.

2. clean the area remove dust then primer it (i prefer epoxy filler primer the one the need a spray gun 2.0 tip for primer also a harborfreight cheap! dont trust spraycan primer not good) primer the spot urs 6x6 spray 10x10. 2-3 coats enough to fill the scratch and the spot u sanded. make sure to guide coat to show any defect. Guide coat is just a spray can paint that is the opposite color of the primer and lil mist of paint the lightly cover the spot u primer or work at.

3. the wet sand 400grit do the whole bumper and the spot u work at try to wet sand area until it bend with the bumper make sure there no edge between the primer and original painteverything is in one. and make sure u remove all the guidecoat out. if u still see the guidecoat on a certain area u got a low spot witch mean u didnt fill the spot good and u might have to redo, depending if u break through the primer. Note use wax and grease remover tide deturgent and water is the cheapest and really the better way to remove wax and grease cause it doesnt leave a solvent base. do this before paint and primer.

good luck
