could be your timing belt slapping on your timing covers...could be a sign of auto tensioner failure, i reccommend you check it out before any serious damage to your engine occurs...

fix that asap otherwise you'll be doing another h22 swap because honda engines are interference type and valves will bend when that belt brakes

Pull off both accessories drive belts and start the engine. With an educated ear standing on the side, rev the engine and determine if the noise is still apparent. You should get a better idea without everything else contributing to the din.
If the noise stopped, so much the better - check out both the belts and the accessories mounts. Something may have come adrift.
If you've still got a noise from the t/belt area, you've a critical condition which requires immediate attention.
I think your VTec issue is unrelated to the belt slapping noise. More than likely a clogged up VTec solenoid or low oil pressure.

how do you know that vtec "cuts out" ?? do you have a vafc or vtec light somewhere, or are you using the " yo it doesnt sound all cool and ****" diagnosis?

it's not the ecu. you either have a faulty oil pump, not enough oil, or you need to replace the pressure switch. i had to replace mine, you can get them used for like 40 bux on your motor. goto a junkyard they will usually let you have them for like 5-10 bux.

well, if you're getting codes than check the wiring, there might be a short somewhere, and try another ecu. there's gotta be someone else in CA w/ an h22 ecu or a p28 that you can slap a h22 rom onto.it could be oil pressure as well. make sure that the ports for the vtec solenoid are clean as can be, no gunk and crap clogigng them. i had to replace the entire vtec assembly, plunger, sensor and all for it to work right.

ive changed it to another ecu its a 96 p13 but now im getting misfire codes 71, 72, 73, 74 i duno if i needed to change my injectors or my dist. like wat the other forms said but this ecu vtec kiks fine... i just dont know if i have bad ecus or im just doing sumthing wrong cas its misfiring, i mean the kar runs fine until when i keep on driving it the CEL blinks n thats when i check the CEL out n it tells me misfireing ima try to turn up my dist n advance my timming see if that works.

are you sure you have the correct oil level? keeps sounding like that, or you have some bad wiring somewhere.
