Default Can I replace my 4 speed manual tranny with a 5 speed manual

I have a 91 civic 4 speed transmission. I also have a 91 w/5 speed, both manual transmission. I have two questions:

1). Can I just replace the 4 speed with my 5 speed tranny? Both are same engines, 1.5

2). Will the half shafts from my 5 speed fit in the 4 speed tranny?

A 5-speed transmission from any '88-91 Civic or CRX is a bolt-in replacement, and your current axles will work.

Would I have to switch the flywheel also?

I saw somewhere mentioned that I would have to change the hubs from my 5 speed to match the 5 speed axle and transmission. Is this true or can I just put the 5 speed and 5 speed axles in my 91 hatchback w/4 speed transmission?

if your car now has a 4 speed and you want to swap in a 5 speed, you use the 4 speed axles

As jlicrx said, you re-use the axles you already had from the 4-speed transmission - they will work with the 5-speed tranny. If you use the 5-speed axles, then you will have to to change to the DX/LX/Si or EX hubs, because the hub end of the 5-speed axle is different than the 4-speed axle.

take the 4 speed out, put the 5 speed in, they are the same externally, everything from the 4 speed will work with the 5 speed. NOW GET WORKIN!

Thanks. That was what I was looking for. I have a bad cv joint in my 4 speed hatchback. I wanted to replace the cv shaft with one from my 5 speed that I'm getting ready to strip down, but it looks like I would have to switch the hubs also, on both sides to match.

How difficult is it to switch the hubs?

"Swapping the hubs" really involves swapping the entire knuckles.

There is no "slot" for the shifter; it is not gated. The internals of the transmission determine the shift pattern.
