Building a Tube Chassis or Front half on 94 civic coupe? Any info appriciated
Ok I have a 94 civic coupe which has been wrecked in the front before and wasnt fixed properly by the previous owner. I was gonna replace the strut towers and all the sheet metal forward ie core support etc.
I got to thinking I might as well looking in to doing a tube type chassis. I didnt know if Honda racers ever did "front halfs" on race cars kinda like how Muscle car guys "back half" a car? If there is a proper way to do this I know I can do it myself since Im a auto tech.

sure, it's been done.
would you want this to be legal for a specific class? or do you just want to race it?

I personally dont think its really worth it. We did it and the frame actually starts right behind the driver. Might as well have gone full tube. We did it this way to save a new Nuformz suspension already installed in the rear. I know some guys just hack the front,im not an engineer or chasis builder so I dont know how strong it will be,but in my opinion if your going that far,you might as well go all the way. My .02 cents.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

You have to plan out which racing series you are going with before you start doing anything. If you're just doing this for fun, then rules wont matter as much, but you wont be able to race at certain events if the car does not pass the regulations of the class.
Unless you are going ProFWD and travelling for that class, then you can take out the firewall. But if you want to stay in a unibody-type class, you cant take out the strut towers and firewall. the original ones have to be in tact.
If the strut towers are damaged, you can run the tubed front to reinforce that area. You can even cut away the Original one if its that damaged and replace it with another one. but the rules just say that you have to keep the original shock mounting points. you cant use the front tube to hold the suspension. It has to be the original shock towers.
