Does my friend need a new ignition? Car was stolen but he found it. (PICS)
hey guys
my friends car was stolen a couple of weeks ago but luckily he found it. They really didnt take much except for the fat five wheels, shift ****, and headunit. They left the interior as is but one thing they did manage to do was break something under the steering column. To me it looks like the ignition and something else but my buddy wanted to know if he should replace the whole thing because he thinks thats how they stole the car to begin with. You can basically stick a flathead screwdriver in there to start the car and no im not talking about the actual key hole in the ignition. so my question basically is, should he replace it or is there a way he can fix it ? Ohh btw this happened in fairfax/nova. its a 95 integra.
thanks guys

This unfortunally is my car. i know they did something with the ignition by breaking a piece so all they need is a screwdriver to start it, but do i need to replace the whole ignition or is it just the one part? Its the white plastic part that connects to the middle part right behind it. if you have any info please let me know. thanks
If you dont know how to fix it, I would take it to someone who does. Thats not something you want to leave broken for an extended amount of time, unless it still dosen't have wheels on it.
when I bought my 95 gsr from an insurance auction it had been stolen and the ignition was just like that, that is how they stole it, they broke the steering lock and took apart the key slot part and started it with a screwdriver. What you need to do is get an ignition from a 98-01 teg and put it on, the steering lock part is way stronger so it really hard to break it, thats what I did and it gives me a little more security because the car is harder to steal. i had a 01 parts car and I swaped the whole column. but its not to hard to just replace the ignition.
Looks just like mine when it got stolen...the steering wheel lock and the ignition is all one piece, so even though your key still works, you will need to replace the switch. If you want the same key to work everything again, you will have to have a locksmith rekey the ignition to the rest of your car, mine cost me about 30 bux...well worth it.

I got some time on my hands because the snow here buried me in so let me help you out.
Please refer to this diagram when reading:

The "white thing" you referred to (#24 on the diagram) basically does the same as what the key side of the ignition switch does without the key. Thieves apparently go for this first because it seems to be the easiest way to start the car with minimal work and no key. It is held into the metal igntion housing by two screws I believe. Check the "white thing" and see if the screw holes used to attach it to the metal housing are intact. If so, you can reuse the "white thing". If not, you may have to replace the "white thing" or find a way to re-attach it to the metal housing. As for the metal ignition housing, if the key hole is intact and not damaged you do not have to replace it. If it is, you need to reorder that metal housing. It usually comes with a new key or you can go to the dealer and have them order you one that work with your key. The last thing you need to look at is the metal bracket (#4 in the diagram) and the bolts (#3 in the diagram) used to hold the metal ignition housing to steering column. If the bracket is broken or the bolts are broken, you need to replace them. Keep in mind the bolts for the metal bracket are torque bolts (they tighten until the head breaks off).
Wondering how I know? Took apart everything on a salvage teg apart to rebuild a non-salvage teg.
Passing knowledge off to my fellow honda-techs.
