Default Pully question....whining

OK,

So, some of you may recall my Crankshaft pulley issue from a few days ago, well that has been resolved but I am having another issue now.

I am getting a whining sound from something around the belts. It happens whether the belts are installed or not. Are there any bearings inside any of the pullies? The auto tensioner has been replaced, and it doesn't sound like it's coming from there. It sounds more like it is coming from the balance shaft adjuster area.

I can't say definitively where it is coming from since I only had a limited amount of time & it was dark.

So, are there bearings anywhere in there? This sound is annoying as hell, and I want to make sure that there are no issues, my Lude only has 70k miles on it & it's a 99 Base...

The balance shafts do have bearings...

That's what I was thinking; do they still spin even when no belt is attached? They can't can tehy, otherwise there wouldn't be a benefit to cutting the belt.

Yeah, they won't spin without the belt on. Maybe it's the little tensioner pulleys????

That seems like it is the most likely culprit. Time to call the stealership...

you might want to get a mechanics stetha-scope(sic). or even use a small hose to tubing to try to locate the noise, just becareful not get anything tangled in the belts while they are spinning.

I already tried that w/ a long screwdriver last night, and I couldn't telle definitively where it was coming from.It sounded like it could be the tensioner for the balance shaft, so that's where I will start since it was hawkze's guess as well....
