how long can you go with valves tapping?

how long can you go with valves tapping?
I test drove a civic with d15b7 today. I am positive a valve adjustment would fix the tapping, but the owner said it had been making that noise(tapping) for 3k miles. Do you think it may have hurt something form tapping so long or do you think it will be OK?

3k is nothing, they will be fine once you adjust them. I have seen them go for much longer w/o adjustment and still be ok afterwards.
