input shaft bearing install qustions
im going to be dropping my tranny soon and i need a new clutch and from what ive heard on here a new input shaft bearing and oil seal cuz i hear every gear winding up and down. do i have to take the tranny apart to do this or can it be done with the tranny intack. how hard is this to do im a novice to trannys but i dont want to pay some slob 300 bucks to do it.
its going to add a lot more down time to your tranny work, especially if its your first time. but i wouldnt pay anyone else to do it either.

wow thats a boat load of work actually im not doing the work a friend of mine that graduated from lincoln tech is gonna do it but thats seems like an intense amount of work for a stupid bearing why did i have to get a dud tranny.
That's a great write-up!
Hondatuner20; If there is any question as to if the input shaft bearing is bad, replace it (and the seal) while you have the transmission out of the car!!
It's not really as hard as it may look.
One thing should be added; Sears sells a tool to help with bearing clip that you get to through the transmission end cap. It's part number 47386 and below is a photo of it.

i cant comment on what a fair price is to pay someone else.
its not hard, really. its just kinda tricky to get that snap ring plier off. that tool definately helps. after you take the bell housing off, its just keeping everything organized and together. all the gears and forks can come out as a unit without disassembling it. then changing out the bearing is no trick either. reassembly and putting the housing back together needs to be done with care as well. but thats really just it.
a tip about taking the bellhousing off, is to not use too much force to hammer it off to separate it. once the housing is separated like a half inch all around, but still stuck, you did it wrong and any further amount of trying will not get it off. what happened is that the snap ring didnt properly release from the bearing, and the housing and bearing both moved up together. you want the housing to move up relative to the bearing staying put. so push it back down and try again... this was the hardest thing for me, as i kept trying to bash off the bell housing after already separating it too much.

it would take me no more than an 30 mins extra to do, now.
the first time i tried to take the tranny apart, i gave up trying... because of what i talked about above.
to do just a clutch job, id personally set aside 4-6 hours for myself. but i know ppl who can swap out a tranny in less than an hour. if this is your first time, and youve never done stuff like pop off a tie rod, take out your axles and what not, then id set aside a whole weekend. youve got a lot to learn for the first time.

how much more work would it be to replace my 3rd gear syncro it grinds every once and while at low rpms oh should i just quit while i have enough work on my plate and jst throw in some gm syncor mesh. also could this messed up bearing cause this mysterious grind?
Hondatuner20;
Here is the write-up that I did covering my YS1 transmission;
http://www.performanceforum.co....html
What I noticed may be missing from that other write-up is that there are some "pins" that have to be removed from the case prior to it coming apart. They just look like bolt heads. My page covers what and where they are.
You should also buy the Factory manual!!!!!!!
As for how long it should take; If the transmission was sitting on the garage floor, I could replace the input shaft bearing and have it back together in about 2 easy hours of work. Keep in mind that I've done it before!! If you have never taken a transmission apart before, it could take a lot longer and you should not try to rush it.
