PROJECT: 1989 Honda CRX Si, y-49 Barabados Yellow! (LOTS OF PIC's)
My names Will(20) and my brothers name is Matt(22). We live in rural Virginia out in the woods. I've owned a few Honda's and my brother finally got into the scene a few months ago.
He really wanted a project car that he could build and learn on. So he chose to look for a Honda CRX Si. He couldn't stand the HF models lack of sun roof, and other Si OEM features. So with his plans for a motor swap of some sort he didn't mind the "Extra Weight" He saved some cash and bought a 1989 CRX Si off a guy that was right down the street. Its Barbados Yellow and chalk full of rust (just like every other Rex out there). She had 223k on the odometer when he brought her home. Here she is in all her glory before a a decent clean and making some room in the garage.

She came with a OEM CRX bra and a sunroof visor which he removed before the hose was even cut on. She also came with a "new" A/C compressor, Pioneer Head unit and 3-way Pioneer speakers all the way around which was a nice surprise.
The stock wheels and tires were replaced with an extra set of 14" steelies with decent tread with the hope that she would ride a little smoother and possibly handle a bit better. Matt quickly matched that with a set of New KYB GR-2's and a set of H/R Sport lowering springs. At that point she looked like this.

One night we were out for a spin and I was driving. While merging onto I-95 near our home the secondary ignition system blew. So we sat on the side of the interstate till 1am waiting on a tow truck which ended up costing an arm & a leg. She then received,
*NEW OEM-
Plugs , Wires, Distributor cap and I believe a few other things. Along with the ignition system Matt also replaced the intermediate axle due to a bad vibration cause by a bad outer bearing and torn CV boot. He also removed the steelies and Kumho tires due to HORRIBLE traction in the rain. So he replaced them with the OEM wheels and skinnnnnie tires! This didn't help much but at least it didn't look AS ruffed up with the stock wheels.
By this time she had taken on this appearance.

Matt also got the "Bright" idea to paint the valve cover Yellow!! Along with a few other things like deep cleaning with SIMPLE GREEN he painted the valve cover!

Next a SS* OBX "Hi-Flow" cat (straight pipe) matched to a SS* Skunk2 Mega-Power exhaust system was added. 2.5" from the header back. Here are a few pictures of the car during the install along with the new exhaust.

The system itself was pretty quite at first but once she was warmed up a few times and was broken in, it became pretty loud. Sounds nice and deep. None of this bumble Bee crap or Coffee can stuff. Here's how it looks on the car.

Here was a nice afternoon after the exhaust install.

Some where along there Matt got a 2003 Honda Civic Si leather/red stitched shift **** off E-bay for like $30 Shipped. Looks and feels nice.

Random interior Picture....

Well the yellow got dirty quick and didn't turn out as well as he had hoped (Matt's Handy-work) So the Cover went to Gloss Gloss black. A PasswordJDM 3-point Front shock tower brace was installed, a OPTIMA "Yellow-Top" battery was added, and a custom intake was built; which consisted of a 3" Cylinder K/N Intake Filter, a CRV/B20 OEM Intake tube, 1 red AEM Silicone connector and some sliced up black 3" tubing out of various intake systems from other Honda's.
The Oil pan gasketwas then replaced because it was leaking and heat shield was also removed from the exhaust manifold. Why does everyone mistaken that for a aftermarket header?????????????
This is how the engine bay currently looks now.

As of now A/C condenser, compressor, lines and compressor mounting bracket were all remvoed. All that was a few pounds off the car. Sylvainia Silver-stars were also added to the high/low beams. For the value, I think they are currently the best alternative to HID's. **One day!
Then Matt picked up a set of 99' LS mesh wheels/caps with BF Goodrich G-force sports mounted on them. FRESH TIRES. sticky as crap too. He also added a PasswordJDM rear strut tie bar to match the front which really helped out the total stability of the car alot. I don't currently don't have pictures of that. However a few shots were taken over the weekend of her all cleaned up with her new shoes!

Same shot in Black and White....

With 230k miles on the stock motor and chassis the car is currently running GREAT and is rolling the smoothest is ever been so far.
This is My brother Matt's CRX. His goals for this car ar to keep it as OEM as possible while making it handle and preform to its fullest on a N/A set up.
!!!CUTTING NO EDGES!!!
Matt has lined up another motor to replace the tired old Dizzy. With the new motor will come Has-port B series motor mounts, shift linkage and 200+whp axles. JDM ITR 4-1 header, GSR/ITR transmission, B/M Dual bend short throw sifter, Koyo/Fluydine All aluminum radiator, colored silicone hoses and a new Radiator cap!
AT SOME POINT THE CAR WILL MAKE IT TO THE BODY SHOP!
This will be an ongoing thread and will kept updated. Hope you enjoyed everything so far! Leave some feed back!

Great build so far. Why dont you guys just get the lifetime axels from checkers and whenever you break one, if it happens at all just take it back in and get a new one for free? Just a thought, my buddy ran them on his 400 hp Integra and only broke one if any, if my memory serves me correctly.

Nice little project. I'm surprised at how well the body panels are fitting together. Most of the crx's I see look like **** fitment wise. Good luck
that engine bay is very clean considering the mileage and age of the car. Valve cover looks great too. Car looks awsome and if you do some rust work/body work and paint her the original color again it will be perfect.
definetly coming along great. however, if it was my money (and it certainly is not!) i would be fixing the rust first, it ruins the car (in more ways than one

Thanks for the great comments so far everyone!
-As far as axles are concerned Matt will look into his options when the time comes.
-As far as the rust is concerned Matt was going to busy himself with the outside first, I.E: cutting out and replacing fenders, rear 1/4 panels, weather stripping and possible a jdm FRONT. But he ran across a great deal and a good motor and so he decided to start prepping the car for that. But like i said YES the exterior will be attended to once we swap the motor and get that situated.
-THANK YOU SO MUCH for who ever took the time to notice how well the front end fits together. The alignment of all of the exterior pieces are great. thanks for pointing that out!

I have had too many close calls dicking around in the car.
I've toned it down and hope to keep her it tip top shape so she doesn't enough up a crumpled mess.
Thanks for the engine bay comment, it was simple greened and more time was taken with the valve cover.

-As far as having everything lined up, man it was bought that way. Since then the front bumper and corner lights were removed, and alot of time was taken screwing and bolting everything back together. Alot of pride is taken in not having huge gaps and things hanging off the car. I'd just take it apart and rebuild it the best you can. make sure everything is tight and adjusted right. Has your rex been in any kinda front end accident?
