Default Cleaning before weld

After I cut a tube wiht a chop saw then weld it, the welds allways come out black. I figued it was a heat issue. But when I weld 2 pieces that havnt been cut together I get great clean welds with alot of color. I figure its a cleaning issue, what do you guys do to prep the metal before weldling?

Wipe it down well with lacquer thinner, or if your TIG welding, use acetone. Also, make sure you take the mill scale off, if your welding plate steel.

Don't get the acetone on your welding gloves while you're cleaning, it'll burn! lol don't ask me how i know that!

Dont get the acetone on your welding helmet lens either, itll start dissolving the plastic I put my helment down on a rag w/ acetone and when I picked it up the rag was sticking to the lens cover.

Rolocs are expensive though for how little use I get out of them. Usually they're like $.50-.75 a piece. I found a company called Klingspor that sells boxes of 100 knockoff 3M ones for $35. Usually I spend $40 or higher on a box of 25 of the 3M ones.
