cable or hydro trans
If you are running a 88-91 chassis with a cable trans I would like your input please. We are having constant synchro and hub issues with our B16 trannys, so much so that we're considering putting a hydro trans in the car. From looking at the two trans side by side they appear to be mostly the same inside, why do none of my customers making big power on a hydro trans have this problem?
Here lately we can only muster 4-5 passes before we'll start getting locked out of 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear. We pull the trans apart and the 3 locators on the synchro will be mashed under the hub. We are only making a hair over 500 wheel, run an Exedy twin disk and are on 26" M&H tires. We had this problem early last year when we ran on our 25" M&H tires as well.
To everyone going fast on a cable B trans (mike, hunt, ballard, etc) did you do anything special to the internals to maintain a quick shifting tranny. Its not that we're breaking anything (besides the stock diff), we just cant shift quickly because we're getting locked out of the gears.
Thanks for everyones time

Sounds like it's more of a clutch related problem. Sounds like it's not dis engaging all the way on the shifts. The big shaft (92-93) cable trannys have the same guts as the hydro stuff. All my race experience has been with hydro stuff, but no big problems with shifting. Things wear over time of course, but 4-5 passes isn't right. Have you tried adjusting the clutch?
we have 90 civic with a ls non-vtec motor with a ys1 cable trans. and we haven't had any problems with the tranny shiftting. last year we were making 508 whp, we had the the car to the dyno today and the car is making 550 whp and 394 trq, so knock on wood hopefuly we won't have any problems with our tranny. and our tranny is all stock inside except for obx diff. in it.
at first we too thought it was a clutch disengagement issue. I know this is crude but when the trans locks us out of certain gears, we are locked out regardless of the engine running or not. Isnt it somewhat correct to assume that if it was a disengagement issue we wouldnt be locked out when we turned the engine off? If that is the case then its definitely a trans issue, not a clutch problem.
Right, but i'm thinking the damage is being done from the clutch not disengaging properly on the shifts, resulting it damaged parts that would make it hard to shift on or off.

could be. this is the first time Ive ever used a twin disk with a cable trans, we just adjusted the cable like any other car we've setup over the years - a little of slop on the very top of the pedal and thats it. the clutch was brand new when we installed it, unless something is defective with it

i would think it would be easy to test for disengagement issue, by just throwing it up on the lift in gear and seeing if the wheels move any. But ever consider if the change holder isn't mildly bent or something? which isn't allowing the gears to go into place fully? I was thinking about it being a bit bent and causing unrest to the rest of the system.
Hunt and Ballard have a driving style that most can't get use to.
They shift a little slower to help save parts. You have to let the trans work instead of just slamming it tinto gear.
