Electronic VSS installation
Got the 10 bolt out which I think was holding in the mechanical VSS (couldn't really tell, because it was such a tight fit even getting a flexible in there), and I can't get the mechnical VSS to budge at all.
Is there anything else holding the mechanical VSS in? Also, do I need to do any modifications to a 92-96? electronic VSS from a Civic D-series to fit into my tranny? First thing's first though, lol...I need help getting the mechanical VSS out.

Yeah, I've got all the wires ready for the electronic VSS. The only problem is I can't figure out how in hell people manage to get the old VSS out, and put the new one in. There just doesn't seem to be any room at all
. Could someone walk me through this or offer me any advice? because I'm seriously stumped.

Yeah, I figured just as much, but my main problem is...how do I get at it? It seems like the engine mount is in the way. I was looking at it at first, and all I could really make out was the wire leading to it. Would it be easier to just gut out my old gauge cluster and plug the cable into my speedo/tap wires into the speedo and run em' to the ECU/SiR cluster?
Also, I don't understand how to new VSS would bolt up to the tranny if the old one is held in by a clip?

Alright, bump. I need a definite answer. Is it possible to replace my current mechanical VSS with an electronic VSS with the engine/tranny still in the car? I just tried to wire up my mechanical speedo/old gauge cluster sending unit and that didn't work out. I need to surrender my car to my cousin by the end of next week due to school reasons, and I need my speedo working.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Yes, you should not have any problems. First there is a clip that holds the cable to the mechanical vss, then there is a bolt that bolts on to the tranny. After removing that, just twist and pull then the vss, it should come out. As for using a different vss, it depends on your gauge cluster.
Thanks for all the replies, but could anyone please walk me through this with the engine/tranny in the car? I seriously can't even see the damn VSS. The rear engine mount or whatever is in the way. Should I attempt to get under the car to get to the VSS? This would be a cake walk if not for the damn clearance issues.
The VSS hangs right over the differential that connects to the axles. It's a bitch to get at, unless you drop the tranny.
It will cost you a few bills for tranny fluid, but every tranny can benifit from new fluid. Unbolt the bellhousing from the block, the mounts from the tranny, and anything else that won't extend >5" downwards. Swing it's *** down (may need to take the axles out), and do your business. My old LX's VSS was missing the clip, but time secured it in there like stupidity in the White House.

Yeah, I was afraid to hear that response haha. I really don't think I have the means to drop the tranny right now, and I'll have to surrender my car to a relative in about 7 days. Do you think it possible at all to remove/replace the VSS with an electronic one with everything still in the car?
If not, I'm going to resort to attempting to run the mechanical one again (it only has to hold out till this summer when I can drive it again).
*Forgot to add* The reason I wouldn't be able to do it is because I have virtually no tools whatsoever right now.

lol! Are you 100% certain that I could get to it? I ask this because I've had the intake arm off, and I still couldn't get to it. Please enlighten me as to how I should reach for it.
By no tools I mean...no means to drop the transmission (basically, no jack/stands). I have the regular hand tools (sockets, wrenches, etc.).

Eff-it, I think I'll just remove the rear tranny mount. My friend says he can lend me a 2 ton jack sometime this week...do you think I'd be able to see the VSS if I remove the rear tranny mount (looks to be held in by (3) 17-19mm bolts)? Of course I'll be supporting the rear of the tranny with the 2-ton, but I just wanted to make sure before I go and risk breaking a bolt (they look really rusted).
Thanks!
Thanks!
I probably shouldn't be bumping this, but I'm just so damn happy. IT WORKS!!!! I re-wired my cable speedo, and it works with the SiR cluster!!! YES!!!! Now I don't need to drop the tranny or anything until the cable snaps haha. I'm just so overjoyed. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread. I'll probably be dropping the tranny to replace the cable VSS with the electronic one if the cable ever snaps or goes bad. But thanks everyone!!!
reaching it from above is a pain. especially if you've swapped motors. I found the best way is to jack the car up and slide under if you don't want to drop the tranny. You can reach it pretty easily its right by the rear engine mount and has some room to work with. I just replaced my speedo cable only to find out I have a bad guage cluster. Don't need my speedo anyways. It helps when your around cops though
