Default mysterious limp mode

just went out to run some errands, i filled up on gas went to leave and noticed the car was revving, intake screaming..but i wasnt moving. i thought it was my clutch finally slipping (it grabs high) so thought nothing of it until i noticed it was also running like ****.

then it wouldnt rev past 4,000. i'm like okay...limp mode. so while in the two minutes it took my car to get to 40 mph i checked for codes. nothing. i finally got home and checked again..nothing. no CEL, no codes.

i drove a few minutes this morning with no problems and drove to the gas station problem free. it happened after i filled up.

i DID run the car bone dry before I filled up on hess..also yesterday I changed my fuel filter and o2 sensor

I'm going to go pull the ECU fuse and see if that fixes it..but I'd still like to know why it happened.

ECU fuse was pulled a good half hour..car revs to almost 5,000 now..but once its past 4,000 it sounds like something is tapping or rubbing. doesnt sound like a valve tap though.

took it about 500 feet down the street, and same power loss..but i hear something almost like a metallic whoosing ( i know this makes zero sense)

i dont know what to do. still not CEL, still no codes.

Try replacing your Idle Air Control valve, it won't throw a code when bad.

first off...IACV is a code 14 if i'm not mistaken..and what would that have to do with going into limp mode?

I've heard of problems like this from running bone dry. Try daily driving the car for a few days and seeing what happens at the end of the week.

When you run your car to the bone, allegedly it picks up all of the crap at the bottom of the gas tank and can mess things up for a few days. Make sure you fill it up when it hits E.

there's no way in hell that i'll drive the car anywhere besides down the street like this. there is hardly any power at all.

i've ran cars dry before and while they might act like **** because of the crap at the bottom..it would not make it go into limp mode.

i'm thinking o2 sensor possibly?

i put my old o2 sensor back in..does the same thing.

i took out the ecu fuse now...gonna let it sit for a few hours and check again.

if it continues, i'll buy a new ecu

i just got another ECU..

i put it in..now my idle jumps when the car is in neutral..almost like a TPS problem..but no code..limp mode still there.

i shut the car off..waited a minute and tried to go for a ride.

limp mode still on..i got down the street and my CEL came on..I got a code 12 now.

the 92-00 civic thread has their FAQ codes thread and in there it says:

12 EGR - exhaust gas recirculation lift valve

wtf?

i'll put my original ECU back in and see what happens.

i switched my ECU back...no CEL no codes..i didnt rev to see if its in limp mode still..i'm assuming it is though.

is it that the ECU i bought..is bad...or is my ECU unable to read that my car is throwing a code?

Well, if your car does have an EGR valve and it's stuck open, your car will run like **** because all the exhaust gas is going back into your engine. It's only supposed to open while cruising on the highway.

My 00 gsr went into limp mode on me once. Wouldn't rev up, no power, etc... But I was running it at Willow Springs in 110* weather, and I just assumed the gas wasn't good enough to keep the engine from knocking. After resetting the ECU, everything was perfectly fine.

is it that the ECU i bought..is bad...or is my ECU unable to read that my car is throwing a code?</TD></TR></TABLE>

still my biggest concern..i need to figure out whether this guy sold me a bad ECU or not.

was your new ecu the correct one? if it is looking for an egr valve and the car is not equipped with one, it will throw a code
