Default Need Help with H22 Thermostat/Seal in Thermostat Casing

Ok, so for my swap, I needed to get an H22 thermostat and housing for my H22A4, since my H23 (currently in the car) won't work with the H22 head. I got the thermostat (with rubber seal) and the case, but the casing does not seem to fit the rubber seal. It sorta feels like you could push the thermostat (with the seal around it) back into the casing, and does not feel very secure when I try to put the top cover on. The space where the thermostat goes has an opening at the top and then two little grooves where it appears the seal is supposed to seat into....BUT it almost seems that the rubber seal is not big enough for the opening/lip that is on the case.

I guess what I am really trying to get at is: does the seal just sit on the lip in the casing, or is supposed to fit snug (pushed down into the casing)? I can take pics first thing in the morning....

Is that what he's asking I can't tell from the description, but I agree that you probably don't have the thermostatin the gasket then put it in place but it still won't feel super tight or anything that's just how it is

I did see that there is a 'split' (so to speak) in the seal, where the thermostat sits in...just that on the top of the rubber seal, there are two little nubs that stick out and there are two indentations on the thermo casing , but they do not line up. I am able to set the thermostat/rubber seal in the casaing, just worried that pressure might suck the thermostat to the back and dis lodge it or misalign it.....

if th thermostat is inside teh thermostat gasket the gasket cannot be sucked in.
the thermostat gasket is designed to be stretched around the outside edge of the thermostat....

I hear ya...I already 'wrapped' the gasket around the thermostat, so I am good there. And when I lay the assembly into the casing opening, and center it as best I can, it feels like there is enough of the gasket edge in contact with the lip on the aluminum casing to keep the thermo assembly secure. Will take pics at lunch to show ya.

I do believe there are 2 different sized thermostats for the h22 make sure you have the correct one for the housing.

when I placed the order, I ordered # 8 and # 4 (just double checked my order sheet as well):

Here are pics of what I was trying to explain...

see the two groove (look like mouse ears...):

it just barely sits on the edge, but not very snug....note the space between the rubber seal and the metal lip (inner ring):

yeah I know that, which is fitting right now since my car has been parked for almost 6 months while I try to get this $_it together.

You can double check with local parts stores and see if they Stealership sent you the H23/F22/F23 one. It is smaller. I have had BIG issues with parts stores not carrying the correct thermostat for the H22 engine. Napa, Checkers, Autozone, Oreily and Carquest all had the wrong one (too small). Maybe Honda screwed you or made an improper assumption about parts interchangeability.

So you think that the thermostat is supposed to fit in there more snug then huh? To me it seems that the seal should sit further out on that metal rim....

ask them to give the one for the Preldude SI VTEC, make sure the number has a P13 and not the PO8 as the one t you have. BTW pO8 will fit the F22 and H23 and other engines as well.

alright, well sent the part back to the dealership and called them....sure enough, they billed me for an H23 thermostat, when I clearly ordered an H22A4 thermostat.
They gave me free shipping and upgraded to 3 day UPS to refund my money to ship back to them. Good guys...

One more thing:

When I swap in the H22A4, I wanted to get new hoses for the radiator.....I just reorder the H23 hoses since that is how the chassis is set up right? The locations for the hoses seem to be in the same if not similar positions, so figure that the H23 hoses should be ok.......no?
