check the odometer. other than that, you can't tell how many miles are on the engine just by looking at it.

Down here in southern cali the junkyard i go to they rarely have 4th gen preludes 3rd gen they have. And 95% of the time they take out the engine, tranny, ecu if it's a h22/23, basically they know what's up but if you go to a salvage yard they usually have what you need.

my junk yard gets like 1 r 2 every 2 months but they crush them so fast by the time u know its there its got 5 other cars laying on top of it.

example i went tuesday to find a 4th gen with a crx si and a civic laying on top of it...it had a h23 with decent salvagable parts...

Yeah basiclly there is no chance of me finding one here - im like the only one in town (small town at that). But lets just say magically I were to find one, or just someone in general finds one, how would you check the odometer if its digital??? I should of specified that.
Basiclly it needs power or youre screwed?

And MadCityLude we need more Avatars around like yours

The next best thing to do is check the physical condition of the engine, hopefully that will give you some clue to how many mileage it has.

not sure about other states but most junkyards in texas will keep a record of what car the engine came from (here they are required by law to match the vin to all parts off a car) and usually they keep notes on the condition of the car as well as milage.
