Default Noob Question - B18a / B18b

What are the differences between the 2 motors?

I know one comes in the da, and the b in the dc.

Are they interchangeable etc? What are the differences?

90-91 B18A = 130hp OBD0
92-93 B18A = 140hp OBD1
94-95 B18B = 142hp OBD1
96-01 B18B = 142hp OBD2

Yes, except you have to take ECU's into consideration. B-series is b-series is b-series, so your b-series motors (b16,b18,b20) will all fit on b-series mounts.

Yes, and if the ECU's have different obd numbers, you will have to get a conversion harness. What swap are you considering exactly? I'm tired of answering vauge questions. Can you provide a little more detail?

one question. i have a 93 b18a and im going to change the whole valve train. at this point it wont matter to get a b18b head for 3 hp gain right? or should i go to a b18b head instead?

If you are going to do that why not get a vtec head. you are still going to do about the same amount of work (plus rerouting oil lines) but for the extra 30-40 hp would be worth it.

either way you will need to either get a new ecu or make sure you get a compatable head look at the chart above to determine the proper head to get if you are going to try to avoid changing the ecu.

i already have a dohc vtec in my hatch and i just want to have a built ls on another car. if it come down maybe later on i can just switch heads and make an lsvtec.
i was just thinking to get a b18b obd1 head so i wouldnt have to change ecu's. but will it be worth it to buy a b18b head if the whole valvetrain is to be changed?
thanx
