Default 03 civic needing a throttlebody?

A chick I know has an 03 civic and the dealership says it needs a new throttle body. It only has 40,000 miles on it. Is this a common problem?? Anyone know where I can get one cheaper than the dealership ($400) or an aftermarket?

I'm wondering why any car would need a new throttle body.

Somewhere there's sound file of a radio show's joke call when a father had them call up his daughter (whose car was in the shop that day) and tell her that it needed all kinds of BS work -- blinker fluid, whole new transmission, stuff like that. They came up with something like $6000 worth of stuff to fix, and to her credit, the daughter said, "I think I'll ask my dad first before you do anything."

What exactly happened to the throttle body on her Civic? How could it break?

For now, I think they're trying to scam money off of her.

I also can't see the TB itself breaking. Some part attached to it like the idle control or something I could buy, but you shouldn't need to swap the whole thing. I'd get a second look, or at least find out why they deem the whole unit useless.

Yeah, info here man. What happened to her TB? I can't understand either why they'd have to put a new one on. Of course, maybe the sensors got jacked up, and to try and screw ya', they just want to replace the whole assembly instead of just a sensor... I don't know.

in some cases in order to put even a new TPS in the TB means you need a whole new throttle body cause they dont seperate.

Prolly just needs a throttle body cleaning with intake cleaner - IACV or TPS is prolly covered in carbon. Happened to mine, I just took it off and cleaned it - all good to go.

hey guys..i really dont know. I got a call from a friends friend asking me about it. The car is at the dealership and thats what they diagnosed the problem as. All I know about the car is its runnin like crap and the dealership said its teh throttlebody. The only thing I could think of was a bad TPS and they didnt sell it seperately. The real interesting this is the fact they want $900 to do it. If it is BS, its pretty shady for a dealership to scam people.

I checked witha different dealership for the price of the throttlebody and its $185.95 and $16.95 for the gasket. I told the girl I would do it for free cause its a simple 15 min job anyways.

That sounds like a plan
Help someone out and save them from the stealer. But see if you can find out why they need to do the whole TB first. Make sure you don't just need some minor part.

Is yours a SI or a EX/LX model? Bad TPS is usually why they change the TB, in the case of the SI it's $700, EX model is $197 to $220 depending on if it's auto or 5-speed. Labor is around $200 or so.
