Default F22a1 EGR Port Cleaning

Can anybody give me some directions to cleaning the egr system on my 91 Lx? or can you at least point me to a thread about it. I have searched but haven't found for f22a1. Thanks!

in a nutshell you have to take the fuel rail off and remove the access plate. You will have to have some self taping screws or a threading kit as the access plate is rivited on and you have to drill out the rivits to remove it.

Once you have the access plate off, have a shop vac and some pipe cleaners handy. use the shop vac to vaccume up the crud from using the pipe cleaner to clean the egr ports.

So when i take the fuel rail off i can see holes that are basically plugged with rivits into the intake manifold right? I am supposed to drill out the metal rivits?

I am a little confused about the 'access plate.' I don't anything other than the intake manifold. It does NOT look like this:

Can you explain a bit further. I want to make sure i understand it before i do it.
THANKS!

That link is for a 94-97 Accord. There is a plate under the fuel rail where the EGR port are located.

On the 90-93 Accords, I don't believe there is any access plate, just bosses where the ports are plugged.

Here is a link that may help you.

Edit:
Here is another write-up on the 90-93 Accords EGR port cleaning.

yeah i was gonna say the access plate info is bad information. th f22a engines require drilling and either the use of the honda plugs or tapping and putting bolts into the holes. its not a hard process just time consuming and tedious.

ok, you bring up a good point. I've read that from other people, mostly on CB7Tuner, about the tapping and using either a set-screw or bolt to seal it. Do you have any other info on this, I haven't been able to find anything. Or is it just self explainitory?

If you do use a bolt, what do you use to seal it? I assume a bolt alone won't seal it?

Or maybe just use a set-screw and then cover that with Honda Bond, similar to the original plug with sealer over it. Then just peel the Honda Bond away and unscrew the set-screw when it's time to clean the ports again.

The reason I ask is because I have an H23 intake manifold that I'm modifing to fit on my F22B1 head and the H23 IM uses the same EGR port design as the 90-93 Accords. So when I pull those plugs to clean the manifold, I was thinking of trying to tap the port and use a set-screw and Honda Bond to seal over the port. I work at a machine shop where I design milling cutters and the cutter and made out in the shop, so I don't think they would mind if I went out there on lunch and tapped the EGR ports on my IM to make this proccess easier for the next time.

hodna sells little caps to put in there, but they cost money.
i usually just grab some short bolts that have a 10mm head, and use tha litle honda bond or small o-rings to fill the holes. I usually just use the drill bit that comes with a tap that matches those bolts.

if you got the nice equipment to drill, tap and put set screws or bolts in there go for it, i am stuck doing it by hand...

Yeah, I know Honda sells the replacement caps. But then you have to go through all that again when you want to clean the egr ports.

well, it shouldn't be hard to put set screws in. I could find a tap size so I don't even have to drill and then buy a matching set screw. If I do have to drill and tap, I'm sure I can use the machines at work to quickly do it.

If I do decide to use a set screw, do you think just a coating of Honda Bond on the threads would be enough to seal it? Or would I need to cover the boss and set screw like the plug and bosses are covered now?

On the 4th page of this write-up, in the middle picture you see a lip at the bottom edge of the egr port. That picture is of a F22Ax intake manifold, do you know if it looks the same on an H23 intake manifold? Do you drill and tap past that lip or do you just drill and tap to the lip so the you leave that little lip on the inside edge? I hope that made sence.
