Default Cat-Back Confusion

Hello all,
So here lies the problem. The way I see the whole cat-back is some flanges with straight pipe. Truely, what makes one pipe better then the other? I do not see how buying a 350 Exaust will be so much better then a cheap one. I understand that the cheap ones does not have the stainless steel coating, so it is more likely to rust out, but I live in Colorado so rust is not an issue. So shead some light on this subject and what you would do. The one I'am looking at is about $165 shipped. I do the install. Tell me what it is with the super expensive vs the cheap.

and here is what it will go on! http://photobucket.com/albums/f208/93Accord117/

thanks, Scott

When you see an advertisement for a stainless steel cat-back system, they are telling you that it is manufactured using stainless steel pipes, and stainless steel muffler casings. It is NOT a stainless steel coating like Chrome plating.

Non-stainless systems are manufactured using mild steel components, which will corrode, perhaps not from the outside but definitely from the inside.

The are all manner of stainless systems out there with a wide range of prices. If you take some time and do a Google search, sample about a dozen vendors and pick the best price.
I've seem prices ranging over $200.00 for the same system, depending on where I looked.

Stainless pipe will last about 3 times longer than mild steel. The quality of the muffler and the welds holding it together are also impotant.

This, along with fitment, is usually what makes up the price difference.

so i suppose snow doesn't rust exhausts in colorado now? hmmm, when was this new physical law passed?...

as for the differences:

more r&d goes into the more expensive exhausts, yielding better gains with not such intrusive sounds...typically, you will find more quality parts that last longer on the more expensive (name brand) products...the resonators and baffling are probably also made of materials that won't rust, thus pro-longing the life of the exhaust system...

i had a stainless exhaust on my 1989 sable that lasted the life of the car. Same for my 1992 sable. I dunno if the V6 accord exhaust is stainless but it is original and still looks good

The headers on eBay are generally a hit-or-miss when it comes to the quality of the welds. Hopefully yours won't crack after a year or 2.

Nearly every "racing cat converter" on ebay is merely a cheap resonator which flanges welded on, and is not, in fact, a catalytic converter at all.

With the setup that you are going to have, your car is going to be loud. Extremely loud. You'd better buy some of these while you're at it:
