It's simply a 18 year old vent!

**** is just collecting inside your vent...rotting away a bit. Stuff stinks...there is NO WAY IN HELL an 88 CRX has a cabin air filter...simply take our dash out and clean out your vents. Then clean our your blowere fan and the vents going to there....

Goodluck.

yeah no air filter.

if the smell is only coming out of the left vent when you have the "fresh" air venting, then pull out the drain cover outside under the windshield and wiper arms. there may be old crap in there or mold you can clean out.

or do as ludesrv said and get to the blower behind the glovebox and clean that out.

go a step further...remove the evaporator coil, clean the coil and drain pan.
The evap coil is where the most of the dirt will be found.

It would be nice if we could retrofit a cabin air filter but until then do your best your clean out the vents and perhaps try this product: https://www.lubegard.com/products/evap/

I Learned from an old school tech what they do is turn the air on high and fresh and spray lysol in the inlet vents under the windshield. It will immediately suck it inside and gets rid of the moldy smell and makes your car smell clean and fresh for a couple hours.

There is styrofoam insulation inside of the evaporator core housing. The insulation can get moldy if it stays wet due to a clogged or kinked evaporator drain line, then you'll always be dealing with that musty smell.

If you ever have to pull your AC evaporator core out, split the plastic outer housing and carefully remove the insulation halves from around the evaporator core. Make up some strong bleach water and soak the styrofoam insulation in the water while using a small gentle brush to lightly scrub the surface. This will kill / remove nearly all of the mold. Mine was bad/smelly due to a kinked evaporator drain line - make sure the drain is not clogged or kinked when reinstalling.

If you do this, be very careful while removing the styrofoam insulation as it is thin and brittle. I broke the first one I took apart.
