Default Auto Tensioner Failing! Hoorayy!

So i go out to my 98 SH this morning and fire it up. Doing my normal lap around the block to get out of my complex i hear some flapping noise, like a plastic bag is stuck under my car. I pull over and while its idling take a look at the T belt as i have the upper cover off. The belt is wobbling all over the damn place and slapping on the mount. i shut it off and pushed on the belt and KNOW it needs to be a hell of alot tighter then that. I just ordered all the Manual conversion parts. Unforunatly 2point6's rightup page is now a dead link. Ill have to PM him aboot that.

it lasted around 35-40K before it crapped out.

wait you can touch the timing belt with the valve cover off? Wait you were driving with the valve cover off? What was taken off so you could feel the T belt?

the upper timing cover was left off as i didnt have the bolt many moons ago. I can see the bottom of the cam gears and the belt as it rotates. Obviously dont stick your hand in the when the car is on, but you can see if it has excessive slack or not.

cool, thanks. I wanna check on that too. That's the best way to tell your aut tensioner is going to hell? And yeah... you're sure you can't do it with the car on? That sounds like the most efficient way to do it, lol.
