d15b1...cranking but no ignition
A friend and I started on his newly acquired project car a 88 std civic. that has a d15b1 non vtec 70hp motor. we were told that it was having compression issues and that its burning oil preaty bad.
Ok so i did some searching here and we decided to take off the vc to see if anything seemed out of order like a stuck valve or anything. nope. we took off the distributer and put it back on. we assembled everything and tryed to start it up but...... all i heared was it cranking and cranking....
next i pulled a spark plug wire and stuck an extra spark plug in it. NO spark.
what could be the problem. i completely took out the battery so it couldnt have shorted out.
HELP ME please honda-tech

Well try twisting the dizzy some - advance & retard - see if that helps. It's gonna be really rough since you have no idea about the history of the car....what went wrong, etc.
Does it smoke or backfire when it's cranking? Any smells? I think a compression check is in order.

ok so its running...horrible... when it turns over it slowly climbs in rpms, all the way till it sounds like its going to blow up. after that it drops back down and does that anoying sound like it got a vacum leak.
its a complete pig on the hills. no way can it get into a parking garage. and it burns oil. white smoke out of the exhaust and smells like oil.
ok to clarify 1 point. when it is not reving high there is no way that its going anywere. so 1st gear all the way to about 27 mph... no shifting before that. its very hessitent at lower rpms. so starting and stoping in trafic is a beast.

1. Pray
2. Nurse that **** to the docks.
3. Putter, sputter, limp it to wherever you're doing the sway, beating the hell out of it as necessary.
4. Swap the motor and take a sledgehammer to the tired old d15b1
Good luck

I had similar issues, check that your distributer is wired correctly to the plugs. #1 is closest to the cam gear, 2... yada yada, like this:
(D)4-3-2-1(Cam)
Not sure how it is on the distributer, I have a ZC and its probably different.

Yeah it turned out that after the distributor wasn't sparking when I took it out and replaced the coil I put the spark plug wires back in wrong. Once I flipped them back into the correct order it started up. I would like nothing more than the beat the crap out of it with a hammer but if I can sell off the tranny and motor for parts I'll end up recouping the cost of the car in the first place.
The motor definately is shot and I don't plan on sinking any more money into it because of the planned swap. At this point however it does drive "well" enough to be able to get it shipped. Besides burning oil isn't always bad, its a great way to get rid of those pesky tailgaters.
