is it primed or raw, if it is raw you need to bake it in a booth first then wash it down with a solvent to open up the pores of the plastic i use 902 made by diamont then sand it with 800, if it came primed then hit it with 500 wax and grease remove it 2-3 coats of base depending on the brand paint, and then 2 coats of clear
lol thanks for the tips but i dont think u understanded me...i bought an OEM si lip that came painted SI black from the factory. im taking it to get painted at a shop, but i want to prep it so all they have to do is primer n paint...if they paint it now without me sanding it the paint wont stick...so i'm asking what grit i should use to sand it down?!? thanks

you obliviously didnt understand my response, ive been painting cars for 3 years now. When you buy parts from the factory the either come pre primed or raw, if you bought and lip that was pereviously installed on a car then it is alreday based and cleared. That my be where i lost you if that is the case, hit it with 500 and you will be good to go, and if you bought it directly from the factory do as i stated in my last pos,t, sorry if i misunderstood

Yeah 95-EJ1 is correct. Wet sand it with 400....also if there is any scratches or gouges knock those off with 400 as well. wet sand in long strokes and not jus sand on 1 spot with short storkes u'll dig through the surface if u don't sand evenly. after u have scuffed up the lip and taken any possible gouges (imperfections) out, get a gray colored FINE scotch brite and go over the whole lip, ESSPECIALLY the edges. doing this will guarentee u scuffed up the whole lip and the edges. edges is the most important for paint to NOT peel!!!! . im a painters prepper just to let u know.
