i just picked up a 1991 prelude si...the engine has 200k miles
i want to do a h22 or a h23 engine swap....does anybody know if this swap is difficult? How long will it take to do this swap? Has anybody done this before? I also have an automatic, and want to do the slush to standard too. Thanks for your help.
you will need a lot of money and parts to convert to manual. the easiest thing to do to start would be to call up the honda dealership and tell them that you want to switch from auto to manual and ask if they could print up a price list of all the parts necessary. then use that sheet to get everything you need from a junkyard, except possibly the master and slave cylinders. those you are better off getting new. to do the engine swap, talk to 3rdgenh22a. he is in the process or may be done with the h22 swap in his third gen.
It can be done cheap. I did the switch a year ago for around 700 bucks, including the tranny. You are talking about doing it yourself, right? Otherwise labor will kill it. If you want, I can more or less give you the step by step and maybe get you some parts. It sucks though, because my lude is inoperable right now, some little old lady cut me off, hit my fender, and slammed the opposite side suspension into the curb. I went to the other side and got a 90 celica with a blown engine to be my daily for now. Engine should be at the shop tomorrow.
thanks clockworks...i was worried that there wasn't ne one on this message board that knows ne thing about ludes. I'm new to ludes...my bro just got it and it's pretty messed up. I personally have z31(88 300zx), and I have to say this message board really bites. Considering my bro's lude is only a 91 there should be tons of guys here that know something about ludes.
I just want to know if ne one has done a h22/h23 to a 3rd gen lude.
I also want to do an auto to stick.
I've posted over a day ago on my user name, and another thread over two days ago on my friends username...i haven't had ne serious replies besides urs.
I guess i'll try to make it easy for u guys...alright since nobody knows how to swap a h22/h23 to a 3rd gen lud, does ne one know how to swap a 3rd gen engine in a 3rd gen?
if nobody knows of any other message board that might b helpful, please direct me to it thanks.
I live in Oklahoma City. The car is a 1991 honda prelude si with 200,000 miles on the engine and chassis. It still runs, but it's on it's last legs....please someone's got to know. please help that's what this message board is for isn't it?

Feel free to ask any questions, it does seem like more people are all about integras and civics, but there are prelude guys here, mostly 4th and 5th gen though. Check out hondaprelude.com, it's a great resource. Plenty of guys over there have done a H-series swap into third gens.
Ok, first of all the swap is a bitch.....Just make sure you have a totally straight frame. I had $160 dollars of frame damage that was fixed 3 yrs ago....but a car is never the same after a wreck...so because of the crank pulley BARLEY touched the frame, i had to do some "custom work" to my frame. Next, make sure you do all the research you can on the h22 swap...i thought i did all the researching i could possibly do...but the one thing i didnt do is ask about PLACE RACING'S customer service.....THEY SUCK!!! They did the same swap 6 YRS AGO....and have no instructions with the kit....nor do the remember what to do. My mechanic and I called everyday for 2 weeks straight askin the same questions...every few days or so the would say "oh yeah...this is what you do" I guess they have sudden memory loss.
They just dont stand behind their products...guess cuz its not a civic or integra or new prelude..they dont care...(like many other companies..but oh well) But other than that....lol......It seems so far so good...my swap is on hold AGAIN so i dont have much other advice or details. Oh...if you do the swap get ready to unload about 4k or more, and lose A/C....and if you keep P/S....get ready to spend another 100-200 bucks on the pesky h22a power steering hose...if you got anymore questions....let me know

you asked a question and you got an answer. if you really want to swap transmissions, then it will take at least two pages of parts, bolts, equipment, cables, shifter parts, the hydrolic parts, and a lot of other little misc parts that you will need. like i said, the easiest thing to do would be to ask the dealer for a printout so you can see what you need. if you really want i can get you that list. as far as swapping the h23/h22 it has been done but not by me, so i couldn't answer that question.
as far as looking for answers quicker to your question, the search option will get you the fastest results. this question has been asked and answered many times over and over. not everyone will drop what they are doing to answer every question all day long every minute of the day. if you don't get an answer in the first day, oh well. wait another day and maybe you will get your answer.
as for third gens, if you have a specific question about that vehicle ask it and i am pretty sure if i can't answer it woot! can and also jg luder is pretty knowledgable about that gen car. people on this forum do not want to know much about that gen lude, they are hyped up about the fourth and fifth gen ludes. that is where you will get a lot of information.
lets start off by getting the type of lude your brother has. is it a 2.0 or 2.1, does it have 4ws? what is the condition of this car? if you do the auto to manual conversion you will need to make sure you stick with the 90-91 2.0 or 2.1 tranny since the speedometer cable is electric for those two years and cable for 88-89. if you don't like this forum, there is also hondaprelude.com or something like that that has a lot of 3rd gen information on it.
to answer your last question, to swap a new motor into that car, go with a b21a1 (the 2.1 liter motor). it bolts up the same and has 140 hp 135 ft lbs tq, as opposed to the b20a5 with 135 hp 127 ft lbs tq. even though the numbers are close, there is a big difference in power in those motors.
what else would you like to know?
