Given that you're in the Northern part of the country, you can find better deals when it's not riding season. I would imagine you could get a 2002 Yamaha R6 or Gixxer 600. Both are great bikes. I'm not partial to Honda bikes because they are weighty compared to similar CC sized bikes and they LOOK it.

You might even be able to get an 03 R6 for that much given the 06's just came out and people can't get enough of them. I've seen people sell their 6 month old 2005 just to get the 06 R6.

Make sure that the first thing you do, if you haven't, is taken the MSF Rider Course.

Keep it rubber side down.

my bike: '95 gs500e

give me your $4k

there's a BIG list of 'best' bikes you could buy for $4k

honda cbr f4i, yamaha r6, honda 600rr, kawasaki zx-6r / 636, yamaha fz6....etc

...it all depends on how good of a deal you can find. Since you have cash in hand its a LOT easier to take advantage of a good deal, happy shopping.

yeah ive actually looked at 2 R6's... an 05' for $5,500. the bike is too common tho, imo. i was leanin towards the f4i or the K. zx-6r both bikes striked me an intrest..
but of which are also cheap to maintain? im not planning on beating the hell outta the bike i buy, but which one would stand up to long rides ect.?

Safety first. MSF done

if i were you, id stay away from used kawi's (pre-'04)

in IL, you can get damn near anything used for $4k. you just have to know where to look.

you can probably find a pretty decent f4i for around that much. and what's so bad about kawasakis? i've owned two and never had a problem.

Older kawi's used to have oil leakage problemsafter about 36K miles, but not so much anymore. the 636 is a good bike, not my styling taste tho. F4i's are the most popular stunt bike around, especially here in AZ. They're cheap and plentiful.

If long rides are your thing, you might consider a sport tourer, like a Honda VFR. They have bigger tanks, more vertical peg and bar placement, and don't keep you tucked as tightly.

agreed stay away from pre-04 kawi's, my friend has a 03' zx-6r, blue smokes like a bitch only has 6000 miles on it, bike hasn't even been ran very hard.

Look for a F4i, or a GSXR 600

F4i for 5k.

One of those two will be my next bike.

oh yeah...good point

gear, MSF class, insurance, accessories for your bike (lock, cover, mods, things that could go wrong shortly after you buy it (like my battery that crapped out in 2 weeks)).

there are alot of other costs involved.

hopefully you put ATLEAST $1k away for gear and some more to pay for insurance and you actually have a little over $5k saved for a bike.

Just thought I'd let you know that gear doesn't come cheap.

You can't go wrong with an F4i.
If you want a naked bike, you can get a Suzuki SV650.
The gixxer 600 is good too, soft seat, great brakes, but the riding position is a bit more aggressive than the f4i. Still great though.
