Here's the deal...got my thermal r&d exhaust installed yesterday. I had a bosal brospeed exhaust, but it was custom fabbed by the previous owner to fit, and was sagging in the middle, and the muffler was screwed (multiple holes).

So, after asking around and doing independent research I went with the thermal, alleged to have a quiet overall sound, but solid when you're on the throttle. Here's why I'm pissed...

Whereas the sound was BEAUTIFUL when the cam changed over (or something like that, not VTEC engaging, but shortly before that) with the brospeed, the thermal sounds like a f*cking WEED WHACKER!! Literally! I'm not exaggerating at all. Before you could hear the engine just open up and growl and it sounded EVIL!! Now at the exact same spot in the powerband (under full throttle) it's garbage. It literally sounds like weed whacker plastic strings whipping arround in my engine/exhaust. Kinda like a whipping rattle.

PLEASE. I NEED YOUR HELP AND REPLIES ASAP (before I drive into a wall @ high speed)

ANYONE with a thermal exhaust (preferrably w/b16) PLEASE respond and let me know if your exhaust makes this same sound, or is mine, hopefully, screwed up somehow. A sound clip or wav would be great, too. If ur car was making this sound, u'd know it. It's horrible.

If anyone knows of the causes or possible causes of this sound I could really use your input/experience ASAP. I spent too much money to have the exhaust make me cringe under acceleration (not to mention it's total rice-boy ****)

Basically I want to know if it's the exhaust system that sounds this way, or if there's something wrong.

I have the thermal on my 4dr and it doesn't sound like a weedwacker. It is really deep off Vtec, but once you pass the crossover it sounds really nice. A little higher pitched but not like bumble bees in a can.

 

I've heard from multiple people that thermal's sound pretty raspy w/ no cat....put your cat on and you should be good.

 

I had a Thermal muffler with a straight pipe on my B16a motor and it sounded exactly how you said it would. Don't bother putting a resonator because it doesn't make much of a difference. You can put a CAT back on and it should sound better or get a muffler that has a silencer. For me, I have a Magnaflow straight through muffler and it sounds good.

 

check it, in my old civic with a zc and a cat cat, it sounded ******* amazing, in my new civic with a ls/vtec and no cat it sounds way to loud...

 

I have a greddy mx cat back... It sounded fantastic. then I took my cat off and put on a test pipe.. I get this ugly sound at 3200rpm and about 4krpm. It's kind of like a metal to metal rattle be after checking everything out I can't find where the noise is coming from..

I'm gonna put my cat back on one of these days and if that solves the problem then... damn!

 

LOL. Your descriptive posts doesn't get helpful until your last sentence. Get a cat, that'll make things sound better.

My Thermal sounded nice and rude (but not ricey) with the D16, expecting it to with the B16.

 

I've got the 3" thermal system on my SC'd Civic, with a carsound 3" cat, it seriously sounded like complete ***. I bought a 3" Moroso spiral flow muffler and welded it in behind the double hanger (you know, after the cat). All the raspy deafening sound is gone. All that remains is a deep, not too loud sound.

 

thats why i didnt get one. you can change/lessen the tone of your exhaust by adding a glasspack or adding/removing your cat.
