Default h22 distributor questions!!!!!

I am having some problems with my motor starting and I have the jdm internal coil distributor. I was wondering if there is anyway to check/replace the internal coil, or if you have to replace the whole dizzy. Also would it be best to swap in the external coil, and how hard is that to do. I heard it all hooks up the same and there is just one wire that runs to a power source (I am guessing the battery or is that too many amps/volts??) I have not taken the cap off yet so I don't even know what it looks like in there!

thanks

to check the coil, you need a multimeter(DVOM).

using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals A and B and secondary winding. resistance may very depending on temperature but if done at room temp, it should be around these specs. (this is for a civic internal coil but I'm pretty sure all honda/acura internal coils have the same resistance)

Open up the distributor. you'll see the coil. remove the 2 screws holding down the the black/yellow wire(terminal A) and white/blue wire (terminal B).

Primary winding(between A and B terminals) should be around 0.6 to 0.8 ohms. terminal A(+, black/yellow wire) and terminal B(-, white/blue wire) are the terminals located to the bottom of the coil. just put the test probes of the DVOM on these 2 and measure the resistance.

Secondary Winding resistance(between A terminal and secondary winding terminal) is 13,200 to 19,800 ohms. so put the probe on terminal A(+, black/yellow wire) and the secondary winding which is on the other end of the coil that sticks out.

to switch to an external coil distributor, all you have to do is get a hold of a h23a1 dizzy or I believe a USDM h22a dizzy. they're external coil which will bolt right up to an h22a. I just reused my dizzy and coil off my old h23a1 when I swapped to a JDM h22a. there should be a write up somewhere if you search of wiring a JDM h22a dizzy to an external coil.
hopefully this helps.
