Default 220 Miles per tank, o2 sensors going out?

Hey guys,'m doing 220 miles per tank, when i've seen people do better milage.
i currently have a 88 Crx Si with a jdm 1st gen b16a mated with a j1 tranny (short geared 80 mph in 5th at 4700 rpms pretty much stock obd 0 (pwo) 2 1/4 piping straight piping(no catylatic converter) to a magnaflow stock looking muffler. i have vafc II but i havnt messed with it, only with the vtec control, other than that nuttin else. i bought the car with the vafc II for those who are wondering why i have it on a bone stock car with no cams... now to the question,

Is it possible for the o2 sensors to go out without getting a check engine light?

any input is greatly appreciated

I had this problem before with my 89 rex b16a. What was happening was I was not getting enough back pressure so my acceleration sucked/poor gas milage/no power try adding a resonator to your exaust system or replace the cat.

can anyone else confirm this? I might be adding a cat since it's illegal not to run one, but than again i bought the car as it is

just replace them bitches. they're fairly cheap and will only help in the long run. Do them one by one so you dont accidentally cross them.

If you want a comparision. When I had my 00si, I would only get 180 a tank. When I added an aem cai, tanabe exhaust, msd sci, different plugs, and cam gears only then did it get up to 254 a tank with some tuning. if your o2 sensor was going bad your gas mileage would decrease but you would also have the tail-tail signs of a cel with an o2 sensor code that went away anytime you turned off the car.

an o2 sensor has to be pretty far off to throw a CEL, as it just tells the computer what range it's in. when they start to go, the range is off, but it's still something it COULD be. it has to give an impossible value for the computer to throw a CEL.

yeah, replace it (them), it's cheap. probably not the only reason you have slightly poor mileage, but it definitely contributes.

I always thought 02's were expensive. Anyone know a good RELIABLE supplier?

Autozone. The o2 sensor on newer cars with the 4 wires (heated) is expensive, but the obd0 ones are dirt cheap, like $35

Yeah, the Bosch universal 1-wire I put on my car, when my sensor went bad, was only $17 from Autozone.
