Default LS vs GSR tranny

who would even consider these transmissions "equivalent"? Are the differences huge? Me and someone are having a discussion about it so i turned to honda-tech. TIA.

i tried searching really quickly from work (new and archived) and i found nothing but a lot of trannys for sale and questions about final drives.
