b18c1 gonna give you the most performance.. especially over the d16.

I don't see how you're going to compare those three together, but it depends on your budget and goal. The most common would be a b16a swap, second d16 turbo, and third b18c1 turbo.

I was thinking about getting a new car, but I can't decide between a lamborghini gallardo, a bmw 318, or a vw thing. Which is the best these days?

Thats about it.
I'd go with the b18 turbo, If you have the funding.

lol...id go with a VW. But seriously if you know how to swap engines yourself and are not on a budget, go with the B18C1 hands down since you can save money and yourself from having a non-smogable car after two years unlike my brother
