Default Need some input on a problem...rear end issues.

I have a 2000 Honda S2000. The other night, while at a stop light, i was trying, not to spin the tires, but to just get off the line fairly quick enough to get going. Well, i heard this snap, and directly following it, was a grinding noise, like gears were slipping. It made the same noise in every gear that i shifted. We pushed the car off to the side of the road. And were looking at it. We came to the obvious conclusion that the noise was infact coming from the rear end. We got under the car, and tried to manually spin both cv axels to see if one was broken or was spinning freely, but both were intact. Then we tried to start the car up, and put it in gear to see if it would move, and the same thing happend. It just made the grinding noise as if 2 gears were slipping. So someone had the idea that we should keep it in gear, and try pushing it forward, because you obviously know, if a car is in gear, you will not be able to push it forward...that easy. Well, one of the bigger fellas got behind it, and was able to push it forward with some what ease, and it was making a few clicking sounds every rotation the tires were making, while the car was in gear and engine off. You could start the engine, put it in gear, and slowly engage the clutch without giving it gas and the car would move forward very slowly, as soon as you gave it a little gas, and put it under a load you would hear the grinding noise. We put the car on jack stands, cranked the car, put it in gear, and let just the power of the idle spin the rear tires..no noise. As soon as you gave it some gas and put it under a load, it made the noise. So what you think?? Help please.

Thanks

Ring and pinion gear probably out of whack. If you launch your car, it sends a shock to the rear end. The pinion gear in the rear end collides with the ring gear. It sounds like it is barely catching when you are barely moving, but skipping the teeth under heavy load. Time to take it out and fix it. And if you do it yourself, be observant and don't follow the helms manual too closely. If you do, it will take you all day long. If you are experienced, you can have it swapped in under an hour.

So you think all I need to do get is a ring and pinion gear set? Cause like I said, the car will roll forward, with people pushing it while its in gear, and you get a few clicks out of the rear end every rotation of the tires and it makes the gear grind or slipping sound underload.??

If it was mine I would just buy a new complete pumpkin and install it in place of what you have. It sounds like your pinion gear didn't like your hard start. Mine did the same thing last week and I just did the swap on Friday. It will definately take more than an hour and you better know what you are doing. The bolts in the axles and drive shaft are buggers and strip easily. IMHO get it done professionally. Most shops charge $150 and up to do it.

He is correct. After careful analysis and observations and inspecting the rear end with the car on jacks, we noticed that with the emergency brake engaged, and throttling it up a bit, that the driver side cv axel boot and the housing that cases the bearings, nearest the chunk, was spinning freely making the grinding noise, while the cv axel itself attached to the wheel, was not spinning at all. The bearing housing was spinning around the shaft and twisting up the rubber boot. So after all, its not the rear end. Its a CV axel.
