Default full penetration on sch. 40

what is some of the amprage settings you guys are are using to get full penetration on sch. 40 pipe? i'm setup at about 75-80 amps and pedal is full tilt, starts the puddle nicely but when finished weld looks dull and seems like to much heat is being used, but i am still not penetrating the back of the material. this is also w/ no filler, argon set at 17-20, still practicing controlling the puddle. any tips would be great. TIA.
Dennis

This doesnt add up. Are you trying to do a root pass with no filler and then a cover pass with filler?

You should be gapping the pipe and doing a filler root pass.

from what i seen most welders leave a 1/16" gap between the bevels to get proper penetration..

maybe thats why

purge that ****... bevel it...weld it with a root pass. Go over it with a filler pass. Try lower amperage and slower.

everyone gave you viable solutions: gap it 1/16", lower your amps, and you should always use filler on your root pass. if you don't your weld will be very weak. the filler is what gives the weld strength when you are bonding 2 pieces together.

Tight fit up is for tubing not pipe (there is a differance) Good luck and post some progress pics.
