Default Anyone tried 235/45 on stock 17x7 wheels?

I am taking delivery of a 2006 6-speed sedan this weekend, and one of the only things I want to do to it is change the OEM tires. The factory Michelins look kinda puny, and the grip levels really are not very good. So it's a given that I'll upgrade to a better tire, but I would love to also go to a wider tire. Anyone tried a 235/45R17 on a stock 17" wheel? I've not checked yet, but is there clearance for the suspension and inner fender? Let me hear about it!

A 7" wheel is really way to narrow for a 235/45 tire. There really isn't enough sidewall support. You'd want to go at least 7.5", preferably an 8" wheel. And ya you'll probably hear from guys here that have done it, but that doesn't make it right (or safe). If you feel the need to replace the tire, maybe stick with the same size in more of a performance tire (and there are plenty), or go all the way and re-use the stock wheels for snow treads and buy new wheels (bigger) with your new tires.

Yeah, I know it's not ideal, but neither is putting down that much money for a new set of wheels for a new car. But we're not really talking about making sense; after all, who replaces tires on a brand new car?

More than anything else, I was curious if the 235/45 size actually FITS the car. I can worry about wheel size later. No need to look if the tire wouldn't fit anyway.

Thanks for the comments.
