I was told that for a 95 DX Civic [non VTEC] I could swap the head and not have to spend money on an entire engine/swap job.

Yes. You can swap the head from say a Z6 on there, with VTEC. It's called a mini-me. Search for it on here and you will find endless threads about it.

You CANNOT, however, swap a DOHC head from say a B16 or B18 on there.

Ok, 92-95 Civic Dx tend to come with a D15b7 NON VTEC. 92-95 Civic Ex came with the D16z6 with VTEC. You take the Z6 head and slap it on the DX. 96-00 Civic DX came with a D16Y7 NON VTEC. However the 96-00 EXs like mine came with a D16Y8 with VTEC. You would take the Y8 head and slap it on the DX. Called a mini me swap. After you change the heads you have to add some wires. Its on here somewhere. Might as well save up some more and turbo the engine you have. You wont gain enough HP to make it worth it IMO.

you'd probebly be happier with the Si tranny but...

it'll onyl give you a little more power, you'll be craving more in no time.

just save up for a real swap, or boost your existing engine

YEAh thats the idea. Lets do a mini-me and flame others who dont know how. I personally wouldnt do a mini-me. The money getting the head and whatever it takes to install it can be used tro boost the motor you have.

What are you talking about? I am not talking about forced induction, I was saying that on a d-series it is not worth it to spend money on a mini-me. I was not talking about doing a turbo, if someone is going to turbo their d, it would just be an added expense to do a mini-me. If you have unlimited funds then its a different story of course. "As long as you turbo it" anything could be worth it, that is a useless comment. As long as I turbo my car its worth it to get a huge spoiler right?

Its all what you want to do. Honestly I'd do a swap, over a Mini-Me, but if you want to do that, then do it.

 

If you're looking for a significant amount of power, a mini-me isn't going to do it for you. You'll end up spending $500 to get maybe 15whp and you'll still be driving a mid-16 second car.

A D16Z6 transmission would be a better investment, as the gear ratios are significantly more fun and allow you to better apply any tiny amount of power you may be making.

A turbocharger would be best, and if you could put one together for under $1000 - which should be simple - you might be able to dip into the high 14's with a good tune.

Modding your engine can go two ways: you can make it expensive and drawn out and end up with nothing but memories and a bad case of "burned out" or you ccan save, be patient and do it right the first time.

Your choice.

i was trying to say that it is only worth it if you turbo it. dont do it unless your gonna turbo the motor
