Default Ls/Vtec timing

I jsut finished getting my ls/vtec into my 89 crx. nwo the problem i have run into is how to time it. I dont have a timing cover so i have no timing marks. I have heard from a few people that there is a mark that is on the block that is pretty close to the timing mark is this true? and if not what other means can i do to time it. What are peoples oppinion on timing an engine by getting the highest vaccum reading? and for the record no i wont be putting a timing cover on beacuse i know thats what i will hear

there's a mark on the face of the oil pump and the cams just line up the lines to face each other and use a couple of punches to keep them there while lining up the tb

OK here is a diagram out of the helms manual for an EF B16, since you're using a b16 head, your initial timing of the cams will be the same, again on the oil pump with is basically the thing staring you in the face that has a hole in it for the crank to protrude and attach to the crank pulley there is an arrow that points to the crank which designates TDC for cylinder no. 1 On the crank itself there is a scribed line, you match up the scribed line with the arrow on the oil pump and then align the cams as shown. To keep the cams in place while aligning the timing belt you use two punches that fit through the top of the cam covers and through the cams to prevent them from moving while putting the timing belt on.

Oh god, now I just got thinking of a recent thread here where some kid was trying to time his car by sticking the cam marks straight up? It never hit me until now that it was incorrect lol. Poor kid.

haha. well my engine is together and everything. like i already have the timing belt and all that good stuff on. its just that the engine is capable of 9500 rpm so i wanted the ingnition timing to be right. but i dont have a timing belt cover so it makes for a difficult time trying to time it right...
