stupid trans question
There are 3 bolts you have to remove in addition to the 20 bolts that hold the cases together. One is for the reverse gear shaft and 2 hold the detent ***** on the shift forks. Then you should be able to pull the halves apart. It may take some GENTLE prying if it's the first time the trans has been opened.
Am I correct in thinking that the little snap ring at the end of the transmission opposite the bell housing has to come off for the sides to seperate? Any tricks on getting that damn thing loose?

Yes, you need a snap ring pliers and I believe when you expand it the shaft will drop so that you can remove the case half. When reassembling, push the case down while expanding the ring, when the case half is seated and you re-install all the bolts holding them together just turn it over and you will hear the shaft drop and the snap ring re-seat itself.
