Default Porting with Carbide Debur on Aluminum?

I just realized that I ordered the wrong debur kit to port my aluminum heads. Are there any down sides to using carbide debur porting tools on aluminum heads? By "wrong" kit, I mean that I just noticed that they also offer a "non-ferrous" debur kit ... would I be wasting money sending this kit back and getting it, or is it absolutely necessary?

Ive always used aluminum specific or non ferrous burrs. I had a burr that a friend gave me that looked a little different from the ones i had. The the edges(blades) of the burr were alot closer together than my aluminum ones. Well i tried it and it worked ok...except for the fact that it got clogged up after like 2 minutes . I belive this bit was meant for iron and steel and such. I say send them back and get some for aluminum heads.

The double cut carbide burr bits you got will still work on aluminum, but you will definitely want to run a lot lower air pressure with these so they don't load up as easy. I would say run about 30-40psi line pressure. The non-ferrous single cut ones will obviously work better and have less of a chance clogging, but you can make do with either one.

You should use something for a lubricant and go slow.

The downside to using those bits is that they will clog up. Do not use a lubricant, it wont help.

Lubricant WILL help, it'll make all the difference in the world. Spray some wd40 on it and it won't clog...

I use a special lube I get from Roger Helgesen,
but a lot of the time I spray enough WD40 or LPS to pool in the bowl, then I can dip the burr
in the pool every few seconds.

Thanks for the input guys. I will stick with these for now since it's only light port matching and very little PnP. I tested them out on a spare set of trashed heads (fried motor blew the rings into the heads) ... worked very well thanks! These where the summit $45 4 bit set ... they want $59.95 for a 3 bit non-ferruous set ... I will deal with these and pocket the savings

when you do get non-double cut burrs you will notice the difference and wish you got them in the first place. at least that's what happened to me aluminum will f*ck **** up on double cuts... good luck and try getting tool saver goop for the burrs.

the only difference between what u got and a non ferrous one is the design of the cutter because aluminum is so soft compared to a carbon steel or casted steel. it will clogg the cutter very quickly. its just like using an endmill ment for steel on aluminum, it will clog and u will get no where. it has to do with the flute design
