Default brake pad shims? use em or not?

a few days ago i posted a problem i was having with my brakes, found out what seems to have been the culprit. my right front rotor was warped and the pads have a black scoring and some decent grooves cut into them. one of the brake pad shims literally fell out of the caliper when i took it off, so i'm under the assumption that was the cause.

im replacing my rotors and pads with brembo blanks, hawk hps pads, and a set of goodridge stainless steel lines. it seems, per the archives, that a lot of people run without the shims and they are really only there for noise supression.

my question is, the new hawks didnt come with the shims and i can't fully tell if they are built in to the pad's packing or not. i called acura and they said i can only get the shims when i buy a set of pads, but acura carland says different.

anyone have any experience?

TIA

I've never used the shims. And I don't remember exactly how many sets of pads I've used and changed, but it's close to if not past double digits.

I never use the shims, I took them out a long time ago on my stock calipers. Like you said, they are only there for noise supression. Now that I have switched to the spoon calipers the shims became useless.

thanks everyone for the quick replies.

i got in touch with tirerack, who i ordered the parts from, and they informed the hawk pads actually will prematurely wear and "squeal" excessively if i run the shims, i was told the hawk pads have a built in shim, so to speak, so i will be finishing the install tonight.

woot! for not having to go to acura

thanks everyone
