Question on cranshaft pulley for 96 lude vtec
My alternator belt and steering pump belt went out on me, and the crankshaft pulley is really loose. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge about these cars than me can tell me why the crankshaft pulley is so loose. I'm wondering if there is a bolt in the middle of the crankshaft pulley to adjust the tension, and i'm thinking maybe it came loose and fell out or something, i can't feel around in there to feel a bolt or where there should be one because it is so tight. I had someone who knows more about cars than me tell me he never saw a crankshaft pulley so loose, almost feels like it could come right off. Also would it be a bad idea to drive it a short distance or am i better off getting it towed? It runs but sounds terrible cause you hear the pulley rattliing around..please help
yes there is supposed to be a bolt holding on the crankshaft pulley, but not to tension the belts attached. the tensioner would be located closer to the alternator, or power steering. i wouldnt drive it at all without the crackshaft pulley bolt.
That pulley has a rubber ring in the middle of it to dampen vibrations from the AC, PS and Alt. and the ring is probably just f'ed up.
Take a look at it and you'll probably be able to see damage...

this is the crank pulley bolt:
as you can see it is a pretty thick sucker. it would take a lot for this bolt to come loose and cause the pulley to have so much movement. i wouldn't even attempt to start the motor until you figure out what has happend. i hope it's not your crank.

i secound that
they dont come off easy.
kind of off topic but not realy but it took me a torch and a 4 foot breaker bar jumping on it for me to break it lose

im currently having the same problem, my **** keeps comin loose after ive tightened it like 3 or 4 times, i cant even drive but maybe 30 yards before i hear the loud knockin of the pulley hitting...but i dunno whats causing it to come loose i torqued it down to the specs 159 ft/lbs (F22A)
Is the key for the crankshaft pulley still there? Once that thing comes lose it will tear up the little slot where the key sits in the pulley. My crank pulley came lose once, because I didn't use a torque wrench and torque it properly. You will probaly have to replace the Crank Pulley and the key. It's about $60.00, and make sure you torque it down to SPEC!

on a lude its 181 Ft Lbs. These bolts arent easy to bust loose.
I used my snap on pulley holder snap on 19mm deep impact socket and a 1/2in drive breaker bar that was 24" long attached to my jack's pump bar. ( an extra 3 or 4 feet ) and then just yanked the sucker. I guess im just hefty. No torch or anything for me.
No real way for you to tighten the bolt without the holder tool. And dont let some assclown tighten it with an impact gun eaither. Find a shop that specializes in Hondas.

they actually make like a little fly wheel holder tool you can stick in the hole to check timing on the transmission, or you could try a pry bar of some sort...thats how i got mine tightened.
...or so i thought since the key had fell out on my way home from school both belts shot off, and now it wobbles around like a two dollar hooker, hopefully fixing it this weekend, i hope all it was is the key and that i didnt strip the whole crankshaft
