my mom has an 02 civic she bought new, so shes had it for over 3 years. shes put 85k highway miles on it since her job is 45 minutes away. theres a quiet, minor sounding clunking noise coming from the front end, and it happens when shes turning slowly; like going in and out of the driveway etc. she took it to a mechanic and they told her the rack and pinion and control arm are shot???? wtf? has anybody with an 02+ civic had this problem? i just cant see how this happens to a car that has 95% highway miles, and thats only 3 years old
they said it might be due to her hitting a pothole; ive hit many unavoidable potholes in my DA and no part of my suspension/steering has ever needed to be replaced. is this a common problem with late model civics?

no. nothing has been replaced except the normal 30k/60k maintenance ****. she still has the ORIGINAL tires, with about 50% tread left. the car sees nothing but interstate.
